Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo. Soft cover. xvi, 164 pp. B&W photos and maps. Fine. Illinois Rebels will be unwelcome by Civil War enthusiasts who see our greatest national calamity from a totally partisan point of view - whether that partisanship be pro-Confederate or pro-Union. It is certain to be rejected by those who loudly proclaim the epic drama to be a clear case of the good guys (us) versus the bad guys (them). But for those who appreciate the horrible ironies of history, this book can serve as one more grim reminder of the terrifying reality that was the War Between the States. Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. The revised second edition of a historical exploration of book illustration across Europe and Japan, written by a pioneering figure of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The revised second edition Of the Decorative Illustration of Books Old and New, an exploration of the history of different art schools, written by pioneering English artist and illustrator Walter Crane. Part of the Ex-Libris series edited by Gleeson White, a fellow member of the Art Workers Guild. In the publisher's original green-blue cloth, with a decorative woodcut title leaf, all eleven half-tone plates to the rear, and full-page and in-text woodcut illustrations throughout. Collated complete. Despite being best known for his illustrations of nusery rhymes during the coined Golden Age of Illustration and for being a leading member of the Arts and Crafts movement, Crane was also a prolific teacher of art, regularly lecturing and writing on illustration. This insightful volume is a brilliant example of his fusion of both practice and theory, being an advocate of artists teaching art as opposed to only critics. In the publisher's original green-blue cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with minor fading to board extremities and fading to the spine. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, with slight chipping to head of spine. Front end paper hinge starting but firm. Minor offsetting to end papers and a couple of small marks to rear. Internally, gutter slightly visible to hinge between pp.160-161, but firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with a faint spot to the corner of the rare leaf. Very Good. Various (illustrator). book.…

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. The complete two volume series of the esteemed Christmas annual celebrating the greatest of Aesthetic and Decadent artists and writers. The Pageant, the short-lived Christmas Annual series which brought together the best artists and writers of the Aesthetic and Decadent movements at the turn of the twentieth century, with J.W. Gleeson White as the literary editor and Charles Hazelwood Shannon as the art editor. Complete in two volumes, published between 1896-1897. In the publisher's decorative original brown cloth, with the original end papers preserved. 1896 contains a frontispiece by Gabriel Rosetti, and all nineteen other full-page illustrations, including two colour plates, while 1897 includes a frontispiece by Gustave Moreau, and all twenty-three full-page illustrations, including colour plates. Collated complete. Contains publisher's original advertisements to the rear of both volumes. Following Oscar Wilde's conviction in 1895, artists and writers were determined to prove that the Aesthetic and Decadent movements would not collapse along with Wilde's career. Including the writings from progressives such as Algernon Charles Swinburne and Laurence Housman, as well as art from Walter Crane and Rossetti, The Pageant is a forward-thinking work which reflects the undergoing social transformation from the nineteenth to twentieth century. An 1898 edition was prevented due to the death of White before the Christmas of that year. In the publisher's decorative original brown cloth, with the original end papers preserved. Externally, mostly smart, with a couple of faint marks to boards. Slight fading to boards and spine of 1896, with faint spots near tail of spine. Bumping to the heads and tails of the spines, and to the extremities. A couple of minor dents to edges, with small creases and dents to rear board of 1897. Slight browning to end papers. Internally, firmly bound, with hinge starting but firm between pp.162-163 of 1896. Pages are bright and clean, with the rare faint spot to leaf extremities. Very Good. Edited, with an introduction, by Gleeson White. First edition. 12mo., original blue cloth, printed label on spine. Uncut. London: Walter Scott, The printed dedication is to Robert Louis Stevenson, "since you were among the earliest to experiment in these French rhythms". Despite that, none of his work is actually present, where they would have been alongside W.E. Henley, Le Gallienne, George Moore, Theo Marzials, Charles Sayle, Swinburne, Arthur Symons, Robert Bridges, and Oscar Wilde.  Wilde makes a more surprising appearance in the advertisements as one of the advocates of an alarming sounding book called "Parental Commandments or, Warnings to Parents on the Physical, Intellectual, and Moral Training of their Children." Curiosity leads us to a digital surrogate of this eccentric book, which alongside rather advanced strictures against the hazards of boarding school and cramming, has more practical bits of mis-information such as "Don?t give your child new potatoes" and "Don?t, especially whilst teething, cover the infant?s head with warm caps; this interferes with the vital activity of the brain, which is at that time very great." Spine label a little soiled, otherwise a near fine copy.…

Illustrated in black and white throughout after Blake, Calvert, Ricketts, Crane, Gere et. al. One of 130 copies printed on Japanese vellum. 8vo., 16 x 23.5cm, [2], xii, 335, [1]pp. Original publishers buff paper wrappers, lettered on spine and upper cover in black. London, Printed at the Chiswick Press for George Bell and Sons.  Very good, spine faded and upper cover creased parallel to joint, but internally fine.  The scarce Japanese vellum issue of this fine study of book design and illustration by Walter Crane, based on the three Cantor lectures given before the Society of Arts in 1889. Crane emphasises that his intention is, in modern terms, to highlight the integration of word and image, rather than pure illustration; 'I have endeavoured to draw the line between the purely graphic aim, on the one hand, and the ornamental aim on the other - between what I should term the art of pictorial statement and the art of decorative treatment. to treat of illustrations which are also book-ornaments' (from the preface). In doing so, Crane takes the reader on a journey from medieval manuscripts, via Holbein and Dürer, to Blake, Calvert, Beardsley and Ricketts.…
