Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Correcting a popular view of the atonement. Was Christ's death a victory over death or a substitution for sin Many today follow Gustav Aulén's Christus Victor view, which portrays Christ's death as primarily a victory over the powers of evil and death. According to Aulén, this was the dominant view of the church until Anselm reframed atonement as satisfaction and the Reformers reframed it as penal substitution. In Suffering, Not Power, Benjamin Wheaton challenges this common narrative. Sacrificial and substitutionary language was common well before Anselm's Cur Deus Homo. Wheaton displays this through a careful analysis of three medieval figures whose writings on the atonement are commonly overlooked: Caesarius of Arles, Haimo of Auxerre, and Dante Alighieri. These individuals come from different times and contexts and wrote in different genres, but each spoke of Christ's death as a sacrifice of expiation and propitiation made by God to God. Let history speak for itself, read the evidence, and reconsider the church's belief in Christ's substitutionary death for sinners.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A wandering 'Orpheus among the barbarians,' a lively flatterer of the powerful and an appreciator of good food and pleasant company: the sixth-century poet Venantius Fortunatus is known to us today for being all these things. Yet in the Middle Ages people knew and loved 'Fortunatus the priest: ' a man of the Church and a teacher of Christian dogma. This book for the first time looks at this other side of Fortunatus' character through the lens of what he wrote when he was bishop of Poitiers at the end of his life: two sermons and a hymn to the Virgin Mary. Here you will encounter something unexpected: Bishop Fortunatus the stern yet skillful preacher of Augustinian grace and Chalcedonian orthodoxy.…

In den WarenkorbPaperback, Pages: 400, Size:156 x 234 mm, Languages: English, Latin. ISBN 9782503620053. Summary Although little known today, Haimo of Auxerre was one of the most popular biblical exegetes of the Middle Ages. His commentaries on almost every book of the Bible were not only a prime conduit for the teaching of the Church Fathers to the later Middle Ages, they were major shapers in and of themselves of medieval theology. His commentary on the Pauline Epistles was his most popular work: theologians from Remigius of Auxerre to Jan Hus made use of this seminal work. Drawing on exegetes from Augustine to Claudius of Turin, Haimo crafts a commentary that later generations would treat as the standard interpretation of Paul. This is the first translation into English of this vital work, and includes an introduction as well as notes on sources and points of interest for students of theology and history.
