An undated edition with preface to the "New edition" dated 1883, of the sixth thousand. Boards a little rubbed about the edges, and with a little foxing to the end papers, but a clean copy with only sparse annotation. A nice copy.

Dark cloth overs exceptionally bright clean and unworn with gilt lettering and publisher's monogram centre front, only flaw is a small nick to top spine edge.An interesting if anecdotal and somewhat anthropomorphic compendium of evidence. 'Strict observation of justice among themselves is maintained by the dogs of Constantinople.'. As an added bonus I have left a slipped in early jocular rhyming mock-rustic letter in pencil, obviously from a schoolboy to a friend, with a humorous drawing, this has nothing to do with animal reasoning whatsoever.

Slight edgewear, with rubbing to joints and to the extremities. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Marble end papers are bright and clean. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with slight age toning and the odd faint spot to leaf extremities, heavier spotting to title and contents leaves. Very Good. book.
