Hardcover. Zustand: Good-VG. 2nd Ed. viii+471+24 (publisher's 1871 catalogue), small slipped in 1888 Daily Telegraph story 'A Jackdaw in Church'; prev.owner's small gilt label top front pastedown and an early owners small but attractively ornate name stamp centre front end-paper, occ. light brown spotting throughout, rarely extensive, but main afult with this otherwise very good copy is a loose gathering on pp.291-302, the end leaves of this plus a few neighbouring leaves are rather more affected by brown flecking/foxing/tanning (or whatever!). Dark cloth overs exceptionally bright clean and unworn with gilt lettering and publisher's monogram centre front, only flaw is a small nick to top spine edge.An interesting if anecdotal and somewhat anthropomorphic compendium of evidence. 'Strict observation of justice among themselves is maintained by the dogs of Constantinople.'. As an added bonus I have left a slipped in early jocular rhyming mock-rustic letter in pencil, obviously from a schoolboy to a friend, with a humorous drawing, this has nothing to do with animal reasoning whatsoever.…

Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. First edition. A pleasing first edition of this fascinating biography of William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester and friend of Alexander Pope The first edition of this work. Bound in half morocco with marbled paper covered boards. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of William Warburton. This a scarce Victorian biograpy of Anglican theologian William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester. Warburtonwas known quarrelling publicly with figures like Voltaire, Rousseau, and fellow churchmen, but took a shining to Alexander Pope. In 17389, he published a series of pieces in The Works of the Learned , defending Pope against accusations of religious unorthodoxy, which led to an unlikely friendship between bishop and poet. Warburton's biographer, Rev. John Selby Watson, is an equally controversial figure; convicted for murdering his wife in 1872. A translator of Ancient Greek texts, Headmaster of Stockwell Grammar School and Reverend, Selby Watson had led a previously blameless life. Bound in half morocco with marbled paper boards. Externally, smart. with minor shelfwaer and rubbing to paper boards and leather at extremities with small loss. Offsetting to rear free. Internally, firmly bound. Ink inscription to front free. Pages bright and clean. Small puncture and loss to paper at extremity, pages 31-47. The odd spot. Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). book.…
