A comprehensive look at drainage by "the engineer of the drainage of the Central Park, New York" with the acknowledgement that sometimes because of lack of resources or time, draining can only be done imperfectly - although the title page notes that: "Every reported case of failure in drainage which we have investigated, has resolved itself into ignorance, blundering, bad management, or bad execution." Very light edge wear and extremely slight spine slant. Contents include 62 B/W illustrations of the Tyrolean landscape and culture within the text. Small glue spots on the endpapers, 4" stain on margin of first two pages and light shelf wear within the text, remains Good. This copy is from a 19th Century private lending institution, the Mercantile Library of New York City. There is a handwritten number and Mercantile Library stamp on the title page and some of the internal pages. There are no other indications of the library's ownership.…

This book gives an insight into the sporting life of a nineteenth century fox hunter, chronicling his experiences with horses, including buying a horse and embarking on a hunt. Waring (1833-1898) was an American sanitary engineer who designed sewer systems that kept domestic waste separate from storm runoff. He is credited with cleaning up an increasingly unsanitary New York City at the turn of the century.
