Clean and tightly bound in blue cloth with gold titles and embossed cover. Light edge wear and very slight spine slant. The contents show scuffs and light hinge separation at front and rear endpapers and occasional spotting within the text. This copy is from a 19th Century private lending institution, the Mercantile Library of New York City. There is a handwritten number and Mercantile Library stamp on the title page and some of the internal pages. There are no other indications of the library's ownership.

Waring (1833-1898) was an American sanitary engineer who designed sewer systems that kept domestic waste separate from storm runoff. He is credited with cleaning up an increasingly unsanitary New York City at the turn of the century.
