Walter Charleton (2 February 1619 - 24 April 1707) Was, According To Jon Parkin, "The Main Conduit For The Transmission Of Epicurean Ideas To England". He Entered Magdalen Hall, Oxford, Under The Tuition Of John Wilkins. At The Age Of 22 He Received The Degree Of M.D. And In The Same Year Was Appointed Physician To Charles I, Who Was Then At Oxford. In 1650 Charleton Settled In London, And Was On 8 April Admitted A Candidate Of The College Of Physicians. A Royalist, He Was Appointed Physician To The Exiled King Charles Ii But Remained In London Writing, In Russell Street, Covent Garden. He Was Continued In His Office Of Physician At The Restoration, And Was One Of The First Elected Fellows Of The Royal Society In 1663; On 23 January 1676 He Was Admitted A Fellow Of The Royal College Of Physicians. He Gave The First Lectures Delivered In The Cutlerian Theatre In Warwick Lane, In 1680 Delivered The Harveian Oration, And Was President In 1689 And 1691. After His Last Year Of Presidency At The College Of Physicians, Charleton Left London And A Dwindling Medical Practice. Spine has been rebacked in brown leather, with raised cords and title labels on maroon leather. The title labels, in gold, say, "Natural Philosophy" and "Boscovich." New leather spine appears to be 50-100 years old. Handwritten note in… pencil on the inside front cover says, "Theory of Natural Philosophy by R.G. Boscovich. Pub about 1758." 20th century bookplate on the free endpaper. The title page is missing. Verso of blank page at the front has the name "Boscovich" written in ink, and underlined. This name appears to be as old as the book itself. First page present is the first page of the table of contents. Table of Contents is complete in 20 unnumbered pages. Following table of contents, pages are numbered 1-475, plus 3 pages conclusion. Text block complete and tightly bound. There are a very few handwritten notes in the wide margins. Text in English. Lacking title page, I have identified the book by the text, by comparing it to the online full text of Charleton's book. This is a complete match. I am not sure if the pencil notation of the title for the Boscovich book was added by the binder or was the reason the binder got it wrong. Walter Charleton (1620-1707). This book is a paraphrase of Gassendi's Syntagma Philosophiae Epicuri from 1649. Gassendi's source work and Charleton's present work both pertain to Atomism - in the Democritus/Epicurean meaning, as the smallest possible (uncutable) particle (as opposed to 'void'). This was a philosophical concept, not a scientific observation. The word was reborn and applied in the modern meaning until John Dalton, around 1800. Charleton and Gassendi did not know anything at all about that kind of atom. They were more concerned with reconciling the Greek concept with Christianity. There is a scientific component to this book, but it resides firmly that the realm of Natural Philosophy, so concerned with God that it can't seem to get out of its own way. Section headings on The Magnitude of Atoms, the Motions of Atoms, The Nature of Colours, the Nature of Light, The phenomenons of the Loadstone, the Nature of Sounds. Book measures 7.5 x 11 inches.
