In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. [iv], 521; [iv], 592; xi, 686, 24 b/w lithographic plates (1 folding map, 1 folding plate). . HB. 3 vols, 8vo, buckram, gilt titles to spines, worn. Good. Withdrawn from an institutional library; neat ink stamps, shelf labels to spines. Reprint (possibly Indian) of a scarce work on Chinese and East Asian botany, first published in The Journal of the Linnean Society Vol. XXIII, XXVI, & XXXVI. The third volume includes the 'first supplement' (by M. Smith) for the period 1886-1904, and a complete index to botanical names. Originally issued both as journal and under separate cover; only the latter has the title Index florae sinensis. As stated in Frodin (2001), 'The main work is a systematic enumeration (in English) of seed plants recorded from the territories indicated in the title; includes descriptions of new taxa, full synonymy with references and citations, fairly detailed indication of internal distribution, brief summary of extralimital range, and miscellaneous taxonomic and other notes'.Vol. 3 commences with a Historical Note, by W.T. Thiselton-Dyer, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew who had inaugurated the project, explaining why the monumental work had taken twenty years to complete and which he feared had 'exhausted the patience of the Linnean Society'. Francis Blackwell Forbes (1839-1908) was an American botanist with expertise in Chinese seed-producing plants who also worked as a merchant and opium trader in Asia, his co-author was the British botanist William Hemsley, (1843-1924) who worked at Kew. Written by the American opium trader and botanist Francis Blackwell Forbes (1839-1908), and the British botanist William Botting Hemsley (1843-1924), widely regarded as the principal author. The fine illustrations were made by Matilda Smith (1854-1927). She was "a botanical artist whose work appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine for over forty years. The work consists of three parts, being the complete Volumes 23, 26, and 36 of the Society's Journal, this being the complete Volume 26, and deals with the Stylidiueae to Cycadaceae. Each is concluded with an index, and in each the page numbering starts anew. Original printed wrappers. = A seldom-seen work on the botany of the northern part of Myanmar, written by the British botanist and Brigadier-General Sir Henry Collett (1837-1901), and the British botanist William Botting Hemsley (1843-1924). Collett ".joined the Bengal Army at the age of 20. In the Jaintea war (1862-1863) he was badly wounded in the ankle, leaving him with an iron support and some difficulty in walking for the rest of his life. Yet he travelled extensively in India, Afghanistan and Burma (Myanmar), briefly acting as Chief Commissioner of Assam (1891) before retiring form the Army (1893). During his many years of active service he developed an interest in botany (1877-), collecting preserved specimens and living plants which he introduced to England. Introductions include Rosa gigantea, the largest single-flowered rose species, and the giant burmese honeysuckle, Lonicera hildebrandtiana Collett & Hemsl. He was a founder member of the Simla Naturalists' Society (1885) and wrote a brief flora of the area with the assistance of W. B. Hemsley. The name of Sir Henry Collett is commemorated in the genus Neocolletia Hemsl. and many species including Cirrhopetalum collettii Hemsl., Iris collettii Hook. f. and Pedicularis collettii Prain. His herbarium was donated by his family to K[ew Gardens]" (Global Plants website). In 1860, Hemsley "started work at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as an Improver, then Assistant for India in the Herbarium, finally Keeper of Herbarium and Library. He wrote a number of botanical works. In 1888, a genus of flowering plants from south-east Asia, belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae was named Hemsleya in his honour" (Wikipedia). Published in the Society's Journal. Rear wrapper edges and spine top a bit chipped; otherwise very good, clean, and unmarked. …

Original, uniform printed wrappers. = A massive work - the first concise list of plants of China, Korea, and the Ryukyu archipelago of Japan, with the inclusion of many new species. Published over a long period, and seldom found complete, particularly rare in original wrappers. Written by the American opium trader and botanist Francis Blackwell Forbes (1839-1908), and the British botanist William Botting Hemsley (1843-1924), widely regarded as the principal author. Each concludes with an index, and each with page and plate numbering starting anew. Includes, in the two last parts. starting on p. 451, an enumeration of additional plants, written by M. Smith, and, in the final part, a complete index, and notes on the history of the whole publication. Stafleu and Cowan regard the Smith contribution as a first supplement, although it was not listed as such on the wrappers of Parts 19 and 20. Provenance: Parts 1-5, 7-9 inscribed and dated by the British botanist (principally phycologist) Antony Gepp (1862-1955); Part 6 with a small stamp of Alfred Newton, Cambridge, Magdalene College on the front wrapper. Newton (1829-1907) was Professor of Comparative Anatomy at Cambridge University from 1866 to 1907, and principally known as an ornithologist. Several spine covers more or less abraded at spine ends, as often; a few wrappers detached, but all are present. A few, marginal spots and some marginal toning, but generally in excellent condition; clean and unmarked. Stafleu and Cowan, 1814. ADDED: A supplementary list of Chinese flowering plants, 1904-1910. Written by Stephen Troyte Dunn, and contained in Volume 39 of the Society's Journal, pp. 411-506. Stafleu and Cowan regarded this as a second supplement.…
