Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

London, The Linnean Society, Longmans, Green and Co., Williams and Norgate, 1889-1902. Eight issues in one, forming the complete second Part. 8vo (21.6 x 13.8 cm). [iii], 592 pp.; ten lithographed plates. Near contemporary green pebbled cloth. Title (of the Volume) on the spine. Original, uniform printed wrappers bound in the rear. = The second of three Parts of the first concise list of plants of China, Korea, and the Ryukyu archipelago of Japan, with the inclusion of many new species. Written by the American opium trader and botanist Francis Blackwell Forbes (1839-1908), and the British botanist William Botting Hemsley (1843-1924), widely regarded as the principal author. She became the first artist to depict New Zealand's flora in depth, the first official artist of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and the second woman to become an associate of the Linnaean Society. The famous British botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker was a second cousin of hers. The work consists of three parts, being the complete Volumes 23, 26, and 36 of the Society's Journal, this being the complete Volume 26, and deals with the Stylidiueae to Cycadaceae. Each is concluded with an index, and in each the page numbering starts anew. Provenance: The Natural History Society of Glasgow (their pictorial bookplate on the front pastedown), as well as a stamp, and small label; on both free endpapers another stamp, but otherwise remarkably clean, and unmarked; hardly any shelf-wear, and all the wrappers fine. Stafleu and Cowan, 1814.…
