Illustrated catalogue intended to accompany the visitor to the Dachau Memorial Museum, through the exhibition and to provide him with a reference guide to all the documents displayed. Barbara Distel was the Director of the Dachau Memorial Museum since 1975 and widely acclaimed as the pre-eminent authority on the history of Dachau, Barbara Distel oversees archival materials dealing with the lives-and deaths-of more than 200,000 persons imprisoned in this first of the German concentration camps (1933-1945). Hers is a singularly significant enterprise since the history of Dachau reflects in many ways the history of the Holocaust itself. Distel began working as an assistant at the museum during her high school years, later earning a degree in library science at the University of Munich. Her responsibilities include the supervision of the museum's library of 13,000 books and monographs dealing with concentration camps in general --Dachau in particular-- including records of medical experiments conducted on the prisoners by camp physicians. Also included are diaries, letters, memoirs, and videotaped interviews of former inmates, many bequeathed to the archive by the estates of deceased survivors. Distel has published a variety of papers during her career and currently works with Professor Wolfgang Benz (Berlin Institute for Research on Anti-Semitism) in editing and publishing the annual Dachauer Hefte (Dachau Review) which won the prestigious prize, Geschwister Scholl Preiss, in 1992 for its volume on "Solidarity and Resistance." Maps This is a publication associated withthe museum at Dachau, which was opened in 1965, having been constructed by the Barvarian state according to the plans of the International Dachau Committee. This catalogue was intended to accompany the visitor to the Dachau Memorial Museum through the exhibition and to provide the visitor with a reference guide to all the documents displayed. There were prisoners form at least 27 different countries interned at Dachau. Rene Auwera, former Dachau prisoner No. 113087 was the consulting architect to the museum project. Very good. No dust jacket as issued. Cover has slight wear and soiling.

This is an exceptional copy in virtually fine condition - a very rare wartime survivor. ***Near fine in the original colour illustrated stapled card covers. The covers are exceptionally clean, even the white back cover. Light creasing to the bottom corner tips of the last few pages. Slight splitting to the paper at the top of the spine. Staples rusted as usual. Internally also near fine - pages clean with hardly any of the usual foxing. A few marks and light creases - mainly production creasing as very thin paper was used (wartime paper restrictions were in force). No tears.
