Percy Howard Newby (1918-1997) was an English novelist and broadcasting administrator, and the first winner of the Booker Prize. The Spirit of Jem was first published in 1967, and is a nightmarish adventure in which a strange young man tries to take over the world by means of an amnesia-inducing poison. The book is bound in the original blue boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with a few pages having light marks where it looks as if a previous owner had pressed some flowers. There is no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has noticeable shelf wear and some soiling. The spine ends are bumped with nicks at the top corners of the spine. There is a tear of about 1/4" with a little damage on the top front edge and a small tear on the top and bottom edge of the back of the wrapper. A small piece is missing from the bottom front corner.
