Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Savonarola: A Biography in Dramatic Episodes' presents a vivid and theatrical exploration of the life of Girolamo Savonarola, the influential Dominican friar who rose to power in Renaissance Florence. Through a series of compelling dramatic vignettes, William Van Wyck captures the intensity of Savonarola's religious fervor, his visionary zeal, and his ultimate confrontation with the political and ecclesiastical authorities of the late 15th century. The narrative traces Savonarola's transformation from a humble monk into a formidable moral reformer who challenged the corruption of the Medici family and the Papacy. By employing a dramatic structure, the work brings to life the vibrant atmosphere of Florence, highlighting the clash between medieval asceticism and the burgeoning humanism of the Renaissance. Readers are invited to witness the rise of the 'Bonfire of the Vanities' and the subsequent fall of a man whose convictions both inspired a city and led to his tragic martyrdom. This historical biography serves as a powerful study of religious authority, political intrigue, and the human spirit's capacity for both radical change and devastating failure. 'Savonarola: A Biography in Dramatic Episodes' remains a significant literary portrayal of one of history's most complex and controversial figures, offering a window into the turbulent soul of the Italian Renaissance. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Buck "I Appreciate Very Much Indeed A Beautifully Made And Designed Book. But Even More I Appreciate Books Which Are Cheap Enough For People To Buy. Somehow Or Other We Must Get Books Within The Range Of Low And Average Income, So That Book Reading Is No Longer A Luxury As It Is Now. Whenever I See A Book That Is Both Beautiful In Design And Low In Price, I Am Especially Grateful." The Quotation Has Ballantine's Emphasis Mark In Margin. P. 23, John Dos Passos: . To My Way Of Thinking, The Great Problem Before The Book Designer At Present Is The Design Of Cheap And Pocket Books. In A Period When The Continued Use Of Books On Any Large Scale Is Very Much A Moot Question, It Is To Be Hoped That The Dangers And Hazrds Which Confront The Trade Will Stimulate New Inventiveness In Design As In Other Directions." This Part Of The Quotation Has Ballantine's Emphasis Mark In The Margin. P. 27 ( Through P. 34, "Some Random And Randy Thoughts On Books", Hayashi 1066, Which Is Otherwise Hilarious): ". For Myself, I Like The Whole Theory Of The Twenty-Five Cent Book. For One Thing The Very Cost Of A Trade Edition Encourages A Degree Of Selfishness. Such A Book Must Be Hoarded And Put On The Shelves. It Becomes Property And Property Must Be Protected. With The Cheap Editions The Opposite Is True. You Load Your Friends' Arms With Books.I Don't Know How Many Writers Have The Feeling I Have About Books. I Do Not Love Books For Themselves . I Would For Myself Much Rather Have Thousands Of Cheap, Dog-Eared Volumes Filed In Closed Cabinets Like Phonograph Records." This Section With Ballantine's Emphasis Marks In Margins. P. 37, Thornton Wilder: " I'm Ashamed To Say That I Must Have Been Brought Up Wrong. I Never Took To Noticing The Chassis On Automobile Engines, Clothes On People, Facades On Buildings, Nor The Format Of Books. I Wish That English Books, Like French Ones, Had Plain Covers And Cost 60C." Number 28 of only 75 copies SIGNED BY KENT at end of second volume and with an extra suite of FIVE SEPARATE 5-PANEL PLATES, EACH ONE SIGNED BY KENT. Two folio-sized full-leather volumes housed together in publisher's slipcase with three separate compartments - one for each volume and the center one for the 40 x 15.5" plates which are folded into a cloth-covered chemise. The modernized text, "rendered completely and without deletions into modern verse" by Van Wyck, is printed side-by-side with Chaucer's original. Near fine with spines sympathetically re-backed in complementary leather. In a very good, solid slipcase with dividers and chemise still present. The chemise, which is stored in center compartment and houses the extra suite of signed prints is more flimsy than one might expect allowing them to sag just a bit though they are otherwise nearly fine. Includes the original prospectus; pamphlet advertising "Limited Editions Published by Covici, Friede, Inc. 1929" with a foreword by Vincent Starrett and "Order Blank" laid in (24-page list of publications including announcement for THE CANTERBURY TALES); and small flyer advertising "New Covici, Friede Books Spring 1929." Exceedingly scarce, especially so with suite of prints intact. Signed.…
