Different versions of printer's device on title and on last (otherwise blank) leaf. 5 works in 1 volume. 4to. Contemporary limp vellum. Five neo-classical studies reflecting the wide range of interests of the celebrated Flemish humanist Joest Lips (1547-1606), who initiated the renewed study of Roman military methods in the Netherlands. The essay on the Greatness of Rome in dialogue form contains several chapters of military interest: book 2, ch.10 on the public expenses of maintaining an army, book 4, ch. 3 on justice and clemency in war, and book 4, ch. 4 on the strength of the Roman army. The treatise on public spectacles or gladiatorial games remains a valuable source for our knowledge of ancient combat. The evocative engraved illustrations by Otto Vaenius (1556-1629), a teacher of Rubens, include: folding plates showing 'meridiani' armed with swords only fighting at a banquet for the entertainment of guests, gladiators performing at a funeral, sham-fighting with wooden staves and fighting to the death with swords in an amphitheatre; half-page engravings depicting a variety of combats: women and dwarfs (favoured by the emperor Domitian), a 'retirarius' or net fighter armed with a trident against a 'secutor' or heavily armed swordsman, a 'mirmillon' with helmet, shield and sword against a Thracian with buckler and curved dagger, a Samnite with body amour, oblong shield and short sword, essedarians throwing javelins from chariots, 'andabatae' or horsemen with closed helmets and spears, 'dimachaeri' with swords in both hands, 'lacearii' with lasso and sword, 'postulaticii' or heavily armed prize fighters who made only special appearances, and 'catervarii' who fought in bands. The famous study of Roman amphitheatres, here in the last edition corrected by the author, is dedicated to the great geographer Abraham Ortelius (Funck, p354 & Fowler 183 (note). The plates show the Colosseum with gladiatorial games in progress, and the theatres of Verona, Pola, Nîmes, and Doué. The study of the Vestal Virgins, illustrated with delicate engravings of coins and cameos, is followed by a description of great libraries of the ancient world in Egypt, Greece and Rome. Lipsius, a professor at Louvain, was a close friend of Plantin and his successor Moretus, who between them, published nearly all of his works. A freshly preserved volume from the Nordkirchen Library with bookplate.

First and only edition of one of the lesser-known emblem books by the Dutch painter and poet Otto Vaenius (1556-1629). It contains a diverse selection of emblems, which, according to the title, were meant for princes, clergymen, military men and others. Each emblem is accompanied by a motto in Latin above and short captions in Latin and French can be found on the accompanying letterpress pages.Today Vaenius is best known as a teacher of Peter Paul Rubens and for his role in the development of the genre of emblemata, in particular the love emblems. His Amorum Emblemata is "one of the most important Dutch emblematical works. It firmly established Vaenius as a leading emblematist after his glorious beginning with the famous moral-philosophical neo-stoic Emblemata Horatiana (1607)" (Van der Weij).Browned throughout with a few small spots. Binding rubbed along the extremities, otherwise in good condition.l Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 840; Praz, p. 526; cf. Attractive copy of a splendidly illustrated edition combining Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata and Le Roy Sieur de Gomberville's La doctrine des Moeurs, tiree de la philosophie des Stoiques. Pierre Daret had made the emblems in De Gomberville's work based on Vaenius's, enlarging and slightly improving them after the latest fashion. The Brussels publisher had probably acquired Daret's plates, and used them again in the present edition, returning the authorship to Vaenius, while also retaining De Gomberville's instructive comments. In this perfect combination of Vaenius' educational emblems and Gomberville's moral doctrine based on stoic philosophers and explained for the instruction of youth, the quotations from Horace made into emblems became popular again.Slightly browned with some marginal thumbing. In very good condition.l Landwehr, Romanic emblem books, 479; Praz, pp. 402-403 & 523-524; STCV 12912091 (2 copies); cf. Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 789 (Spanish ed. Brussels, 1669 ); R. Paultre, Les images du livre, pp. 137-145. 18th-century tree calf, gold-tooled spine with red title-label, gold-tooled sides and marbled endpapers. With the title page printed in red and black ink, engraved illustration on the title page by Petrus Clouwet (after Abraham van Diepenbeek), engraved author's portrait by Paulus Pontus, and 103 engraved emblems by Pierre Daret after Otto Vaenius, and engraved folding plate of the "Table of Cebes", 2 engraved headpieces, and numerous woodcut initials. Pages: XI, [5], 211, [1] pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. The Batavische oft oude Hollandtsche oorloghe teghen de Romeynen (1612) by Otto van Veen, with engravings by Antonio Tempesta, visually narrates Tacitus' account of the Batavian revolt, framing it as a heroic struggle for freedom. The book played a key role in shaping Dutch national identity by linking the ancient Batavians to the Republic's own fight against foreign domination.Oblong half leather binding with some wear. 36 good quality engravings with text in Dutch and Latin, signed A. Tempesta = Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630). Battle between the Dutch and the Romans based on the stories of Tacitus. Plaat 1 is gedateerd 1611. B1829.
