Contemporary marbled calf, back-strip richly gilt. First edition of a treatise on usury and credit by a Catholic moralist from Lyon. Distinguishing between usury and interest, the author condemns the former, and accepts the latter as justifiable gain. In support of his arguments he appends the encyclical letter "Vix pervenit" by Pope Benedict XIV, dated 1745, with Latin and French parallel texts on pp265-293. This work was refuted by several contemporary authors. Higgs 4740 (without mention of errata leaf).

First edition of this detailed official report on the Paris meetings held by the Gallic Church to discuss the practice of usury in order to reconcile religious dogma with French law. Usury was morally condemned on principle on the grounds of natural, divine and civil laws, and its practitioners were charged with bad faith. The report was compiled by Father Le Semelier and published on the instructions of Cardinal Louis-Antoine de Noailles, Archbishop of Paris (1651-1729). An attractive set.
