New York: Brentano's, 1943, 31 plates, 281pp., fair only dust-jacket, chipped around edges, and with 4cm strip across rear panel torn and laid in loose, good red cloth, light wear to covers. "fictionized biography" of a 17th century Polish Queen, written in English by Bates-Batcheller when she was in France during the German occupation; the manuscript miraculously saved. The author came from a wealth Boston family, which helped endow the Boston Public Library, but she was educated and lived in France, returning to the US in 1941. Book Review in "The Spectator", 17 Jan 1914: {The author of several highly successful hooks on Italy, Mrs. Batcheller has now turned her attention to a less trodden field. Her new work describes a journey through Spain which she was privileged to make in the company of H.R.H. the Infanta Eulalia. In these circumstances Mrs. Batcheller naturally gained " rare and highly unusual opportunities for observation among the people, as well as among the higher classes of society." She gives an interesting account of modern Spain, and of those in whose hands the destinies of the country lie to-day. "Anyone who knows anything of the King of Spain knows that his dominant characteristic is the conscientious desire to leave nothing undone which he may do or cause to be done for the benefit, progress, and improvement of his country."}. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. ITALIAN CASTLES AND COUNTRY SEATS BY TRYPHOSA BATES BATCHELLER 1911 1ST INSCRIBED. I vividly remember buying this book and many others at an estate sale of a noble family s palazzo on the banks of the Tiber in Rome in 1978. And what a library it was! Please find: Italian Castles and Country Seats by Tryphosa Bates Batcheller. This largish hard cover book (7 x 10 x 2 inches, 512 pages, some of them uncut) was published by Longmans, Green, and Co. of London, New York, Bombay, and Calcutta, dated 1911 and a First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. The book is bound in dark green cloth with elaborate gilt titles and decorations on cover and spine. It is inscribed by the Author to the former owner, the Princess Giustiniani-Bandini. It is lavishly illustrated throughout with 87 illustrations including photos, tissue-guarded photogravures and color photos (just a few). Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are quite handsome and attractive despite some minor bumping to the corners and spine tips. There are small blemishes to the finish both front & rear but nothing extreme. Inside, there is a label from the former owners and an inscription to the Princess on the half-title page. The interior pages and many plates are clean and bright and as mentioned, some of then are uncut so the book has never been fully read. Both hinges are intact but the binding is cracked elsewhere; despite that it still seems sound and strong. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Inscribed by Author.…
