The Mau Mau uprising began in 1952, and the atrocities committed by the rebels were matched by those of the British, whose Attorney General in Kenya, Eric Griffith-Jones, wrote to Governor Baring in 1957 that the colony's detention camps for Mau Mau suspects were 'distressingly reminiscent of conditions in Nazi Germany or Commun…ist Russia'. He advised that suspects be beaten mainly on their upper bodies, and that those administering violence should 'remain, collected, balanced and dispassionate', also commenting: 'If we are going to sin, we must sin quietly.' Among the victims of British brutality was Hussein Onyango Obama, grandfather of President Barack Obama. From a batch of Foreign Office documents, including material from the Information Research Department (for whose activities, financed from the budget of the Special Intelligence Service, otherwise MI6, see The Times, 17 August 1995; and also Michael Cullis's obituary of Sir John Peck in the Independent, 20 January 1995). Duplicated typescript. Headed: '(a) The political and economic effect of MAU MAU in KENYA.' 8pp, foolscap 8vo. Paginated '(a) 1' to '(a) 7', including interpolated passage on '(a) 2A'. Complete, with catchwords to all but the last page. Divided into five sections, headed: 'What is Mau Mau?', 'Action against Mau Mau terrorism', 'Sir Philip Mitchell's dispatch on East African economic problems' (with subsections on 'Population Problems', 'Labour problems and Wages', 'Social Welfare'), 'Royal Commission for East Africa', 'Development plans for Kenya'. The first section begins: 'Before considering in detail what the secret society called Mau Mau is, and what are its aims; it will be as well to examine traditional background of the tribe of Africans involved the Kikuyu.' The section includes an 'account of the barbaric rites practised at Mau Mau initiation ceremonies', from 'the Nairobi Correspondent of The Times' (9 October 1952). The section on 'Mau Mau terrorism' begins with a description of the police response to 'the murder of Chief Waruhiu', and discusses the activities of Jomo Kenyatta. The points of Sir Evelyn Baring's 'programme for the economic and social development of Kenya' (28 October 1952) are enumerated in the last section, followed by a description of Governor Baring's'defence plans'. No other copy traced.

2pp., small 4to. On two leaves of watermarked paper. Hurriedly-penned abbreviated memoranda. Although related, it is not clear whether the two leaves are sequential. The first is headed 'The Comanche tribe'. After a couple of lines Evans describes 'Crossing Arkansas R[iver] on the way we got to their Wigwam & smoked We were 3/4…arguing re buying of skins I had rep. rifle hairy. The door of wigwam lifted by a string. I lifted door saw the ground cov[ered] with horses feet. Did not stop but stepped out with my ri[fle] I found the wig[wam] comple[tely] surr[ounded] By me an old man app[eared] ch. I went to him & held out my hand he looked & suddenly took it Near him a man import[ant] I said non Aamericano sed Anglese'. The first page ends here. The second page begins: 'So he saw they were going on.' It concludes 'Then the old chief asked me to go back with them as their guest & wd have more time | but man in Am[erican] fort begged me not to accept. The chief took out of his belt at to keep in memory of the tribe - & at any time to bring it back myself or my son & receive the welcome of the tribe - Comanche' [second page ends here]. In 1899 Evans, through the influence of his father, secured a position ith the general manager of the Atlantic Transport Line in New York. He then travelled, according to a newspaper account, 'to the Far West, when he visited the whole coast line from Victoria, British Columbia, to San Diego in Southern California, afterwards returning, via New Orleans and Galveston and the south-east ports up to Washington, whe he had an interesting interview with the late President McKinley at the White House. A short visit in Eastern Canada completed this tour.' He returned to England in July 1900.

Very good condition. Original platemark visible. Minor printing crease lower left border. Size 8.5 x 14.5 Inches. A fine example of Christian van Adrichem's rare 1590 map of the lands granted to the Tribe of Naphtali at the time of Joshua's division of the Twelve Tribes. The map is oriented to the east and covers form the Sea of… Galilee northwards along the Jordan River as far as Lebanon and the Golan Heights. Naphtali was part of the Kingdom of Israel until its lands were conquered by Assyria in c. 723 BC and the population deported. Since that time it has been considered one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. Numerous Biblical sites are noted including the Mount of the Beatitudes at Capernaum. This map is the seventh of ten maps of the Holy Land prepared by Christian van Adrichem for publication in his Theatrum Terrae Sanctae . Adrichem's maps for the Theatrum were prepared between 1580 and 1585, but were published posthumously by his associate, Gerardis Brunius of Koln, in 1590. The publication went through several later editions and served as a basis for most subsequent maps of the Holy Land well into the 18th century. Very good. Folds into original marbled slipcase. Old linen backing stable. Size 35 x 50 Inches. This is Alban-Emmanuel Guillaume Rey's c. 1859 large-format folding map of the Holy Land, and more specifically, the lands of the Tribe of Judah, one of the ancient Twelve Tribes of Israel. Rey's expedition to Palestine, which resulte…d in this map, was an early example of Biblical geography, combining modern surveying techniques with the scholarly study of religion, archaeology, linguistics, and other emerging disciplines. A Closer Look The map covers from Jaffa (now part of Tel Aviv-Yafo) in the north to Khan Younis south of Gaza in the south, and from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Dead Sea (lac Asphaltite) in the east. Settlements are noted throughout with their modern (Arabic) names and, where suitable, their ancient (Hebrew) names in parentheses; Jerusalem appears towards top-right. Terrain is depicted along the Mediterranean coast, while contour lines indicate changes in elevation. Waterways, ancient ruins, roads, paths, churches, mosques, roadside blockhouses, and ancient sites (such as Solomon's Pools / Vasques de Solomon southwest of Bethlehem, which provided water for aqueducts feeding into Jerusalem) are also recorded throughout. Descriptive text in French appears throughout, noting ruins and characteristics of the terrain, especially along the Dead Sea. Tribe of Judah The Tribe of Judah was one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel in ancient times, traditionally descended from Judah, the fourth son of the patriarch Jacob (also called Israel) and Leah, his first wife. The tribe played a major role in the history and identity of the Israelites and, later, the Jewish people. According to scripture, Judah was a major power in the region during the united monarchy under Kings Saul, David, and Solomon (c. 11th - 10th centuries BCE). When the tribes split around 930 BCE, Judah became the core of the southern kingdom, called the Kingdom of Judah (the ten northern tribes formed the Kingdom of Israel). Judah lasted until the onset of the Babylonian Captivity in 586 BCE, but has had a deep influence on Jewish identity since, from the establishment of Jerusalem as the capital of the United Kingdom (and later the Kingdom of Judah) by King David (the city's emblem incorporates the Lion of Judah), to the very word 'Jew' (Yehudim), based on the tribe's name. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by Rey and originally appeared as a two-sheet map to accompany his book Étude Historique et Topographique de la Tribu de Juda (Paris: A. Bertrand, 1862). However, the present example is separately issued, dissected, and laid on linen for folding into a slipcase. This presentation of the map is very rare; we have been unable to locate it in any institutions, and it has only sporadically appeared on the market in recent years.
