Original Wraps. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo (16.3 x 10.4 cm.): 24 pages; sewn, with marbled paper spine strip. VERY RARE WORK, NOT IN SABIN, ON MISSIONARY ACTIVITY BY THE MORAVIAN CHURCH AMONG THE NATIVE AMERICANS OF NORTH AMERICA. Only four copies listed in OCLC/WorldCat in U.S. libraries, and none at the Library of Congress. The work begins: "In the year 1739, the Moravian Church in Germany received so deplorable an account of the state of the poor savages in North America, that it made upon them a very strong impression; and several unmarried men resolved to venture their lives in trying to make these heathen acquainted with their Saviour. Twelve were named candidates for this mission, and one of them, Christian Henry Rauch, was sent, in 1739, from Marienborn, in Germany, to New York, to seek an opportunity to go and preach the Gospel to the Indians." The rest of this short work is an account of this missionary activity through the 1740s. Two of Rauch's earliest converts, Tschoop (baptized "John") and Shabasch (baptized "Abraham") of the Mohican tribe, feature prominently in the narrative, as they travel with Rauch and his Moravian brethren through the backwoods of New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania seeking new converts. Tschoop, who died of smallpox in 1746, was the subject of an 1842 American Sunday-School Union pamphlet entitled "Tschoop: the Converted Indian Chief," copies of which frequently appear on the antiquarian book market.
