Alongside these iconic images lie concerns about environmental degradation, declining wildlife populations, and about worsening pov…erty of pastoral peoples. East Africa presents in microcosm the paradox so widely seen across sub Saharan Africa, where the world's poorest and most vulnerable populations live alongside some of the world's most outstanding biodiversity resources. Over the last decade or so, community conservation has emerged as a way out of poverty and environmental problems for these rural populations, focusing on the sustainable use of wildlife to generate income that could underpin equally sustainable development. Given the enduring interest in East African wildlife, and the very large tourist income it generates, these communities and ecosystems seem a natural case for green development based on community conservation.This volume is focused on the livelihoods of the Maasai in two different countries - Kenya and Tanzania. This cross-border comparative analysis looks at what people do, why they choose to do it, with what success and with what implications for wildlife. The comparative approach makes it possible to unpack the interaction of conservation and development, to identify the main drivers of livelihoods change and the main outcomes of wildlife conservation or other land use policies, while controlling for confounding factors in these semi-arid and perennially variable systems. This synthesis draws out lessons about the successes and failures of community conservation-based approach to development in Maasailand under different national political and economic contexts and different local social and historical particularities.

A fascinating personal account of Chapman's adventure in the beautiful fjords and fjelds of Norway, including tales of hunting elk and reindeer, as well as fishing for salmon. Despite being a prolific hunter, Chapman aided Walter Buck in creating the Coto Doñana nature reserve in southern Spain which helped save the Spanish Ibex from extinction. In the publisher's original blue cloth. Externally, very smart with minimal marks. Small knocks to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. End papers are bright and clean. The article states that Trench "some years since proposed forming a continuous quay along the nothern shore of the Thames", has published other proposals: "A Proposition for the Disposal of Buckingham House, fo…r a National Picture Gallery, A National Statue Gallery, and for the King's College; leaving one entire end of the Palace and one Wing, with the whole of the other Attics, for other public purposes." The writer gives the pros and cons of these ideas(affecting Somerset House etc). A lengthy letter from F.W. Trench responding to the John Bull columnist is printed, in which he gives a detailed defence of his ideas.Note: "During the reigns of George IV. and William IV., and in the early part of Victoria, the subject of an embankment for the river from London Bridge to Westminster was brought forward in the House of Commons by the late Sir Frederick W. Trench, but still, as is too often the case, 'nothing was done.' Perhaps in the event London has been fortunate, for if the work of embanking the Thames had been taken in hand in the days of our fathers or our grandfathers, it is to be feared that it would not have been carried out upon the scale of magnificence which marks the work of Sir J. W. Bazalgette. It appears that in 1840 Mr. James Walker laid down a line of embankment for the Corporation, which has now in the main been followed.From: 'The Victoria Embankment', Old and New London: Volume 3 (1878), pp. 322-329." COPAC lists one item which echoes this title, at the Guildhall, but it has 3pp., and is smaller (28cm), this being c.24 x 40cm. WorldCat lists another copy of the 3-page edition at Kansas.
