Wraps. Craig, John A. (illustrator). Presumed first edition/first printing. [2], 32, [14] p. Includes illustrations. Most illustrations in color. Bibliography. The Novartis Foundation produces Symposia, in which groups of leading scientists from a range of topics across biology, chemistry and medicine assembled to present papers and discuss results. The Novartis Foundation, originally known as the Ciba Foundation, is well known to scientists and clinicians around the world. From Wikipedia: "A gallstone (also called cholelithiasis) is a crystalline concretion formed within the gallbladder by accretion of bile components. These calculi are formed in the gallbladder but may distally pass into other parts of the biliary tract such as the cystic duct, common bile duct, pancreatic duct or the ampulla of Vater. Rarely, in cases of severe inflammation, gallstones may erode through the gallbladder into adherent bowel potentially causing an obstruction termed gallstone ileus. Presence of gallstones in the gallbladder may lead to acute cholecystitis, an inflammatory condition characterized by retention of bile in the gallbladder and often secondary infection by intestinal microorganisms, predominantly Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter and Bacteroides species. Presence of gallstones in other parts of the biliary tract can cause obstruction of the bile ducts, which can lead to serious conditions such as ascending cholangitis or pancreatitis. Either of these two conditions can be life-threatening and are therefore considered to be medical emergencies." From an obituary posted on-line: "Dr. Schoenfield served as associate professor of medicine and consultant in gastroenterology on the faculty of the Mayo Clinic for seven years. He became a professor of medicine in residence at UCLA from 1972 to 1999 (now emeritus). He was the director of gastroenterology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for 25 years, where he received the chief resident's teaching award, the president's award, and the pioneer of medicine award. Les received his pioneer of medicine award for his cutting-edge research into the cause and treatment of gallstones. In the research laboratory, he studied bile acids and their role in the development of gallstones. In the 1980's he was the director of the National Cooperative Gallstone Study, a large, multi-centered study that evaluated the treatment of gallstones with oral medications. This study ultimately led to the approval of oral medications for the treatment of gallstones." From an on-line posting: Dr. Craig "worked as an ophthalmic illustrator at Baylor College of Medicine from 1972-1983, in addition to painting for CIBA and then Novartis.Dr. Craig was Senior Artist and Consultant for Clinical Symposia, a contributor to the NovaCON Disease Education Series (CD-ROM) as well as the Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations until 2006. Dr. Craig received his medical degree and a postgraduate degree in ophthalmology from The University of Texas medical Branch, Galveston." Good. Cover has some wear and soiling.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Innovative Methods of Marine Ecosystem Restoration offers a ray of hope in an increasingly gloomy scenario. This book is the first presentation of revolutionary new methods for restoring damaged marine ecosystems. It discusses new techniques for greatly increasing the recruitment, growth, survival, and resistance to stress of marine ecosystems, fisheries, and eroding shorelines, maintaining biodiversity and productivity where it would be lost. The book provides experimental proof that mild electrical stimulation results in increased settlement, increased growth, and reduced mortality for a wide variety of marine organisms, including corals, oysters, sponges, sea-grasses, and salt-marsh grasses. In addition to the diversity of ecosystems and geographic regions covered, the contributors from fourteen nations across the globe make this work the first truly global study of marine ecosystem restoration.
