Language: Czech and English "This Czech-English publication presents a selection of forty photographs accompanied by a text by French archaeologist Alain Schnapp and quotations by him from travellers, historians and writers about these buildings in the past. The book was published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. Josef Koudelka always photographed a world that was disappearing and needed to be remembered, whether it was the lifestyle of the Roma, the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops, religious festivals or landscapes marked by human activity. In his collection of photographs of ruins, he captures the formerly representative buildings of the Greco-Roman world, now transformed into mere remnants of their former glory. They have survived the ravages of time and therefore have a power that Josef Koudelka has tried to translate into images and make present.
