Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Drawn from a broad range of photography, from works by famed photographers to anonymous images, Once Upon a Time in the East offers a portrait of Czechoslovakia across the 20th century, registering its dramatic changes of regime as well as more intimate scenes of daily life. Communist demonstrations and festivals are documented alongside domestic scenes in pubs and cottages. Among the historic moments recorded in this volume are the blasting of the Stalin monument in Prague in 1962 (taken by an unknown photographer); Milon Novotny's photographs of the funeral parade of Jan Palach in 1969; and an incredible series of surveillance photographs taken by an unidentified member of the Czech secret police, which furtively documents equally furtive assignations on the streets of Prague. Works by Ivo Gil, Josef Koudelka, Jindrich Streit, Miroslav Tichy, Jiri Toman and many others are also included.…

Published to accompany the exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague from 4 December 2024 to 30 March 2025; Hardback, [112] unnumbered pages with reproductions, folio (21.5 x 34.5 cm), brand-new copy. Language: Czech and English "This Czech-English publication presents a selection of forty photographs accompanied by a text by French archaeologist Alain Schnapp and quotations by him from travellers, historians and writers about these buildings in the past. The book was published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. Josef Koudelka always photographed a world that was disappearing and needed to be remembered, whether it was the lifestyle of the Roma, the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops, religious festivals or landscapes marked by human activity. In his collection of photographs of ruins, he captures the formerly representative buildings of the Greco-Roman world, now transformed into mere remnants of their former glory. They have survived the ravages of time and therefore have a power that Josef Koudelka has tried to translate into images and make present. As the author himself remarks: "Ruins are not the past but the future. One day, everything around us will be ruins."" Book Language/s: Czech, English.…
