See images for condition. About the book >.>.> There is a wonderful mismatch between the imposed order of geometry and the liberty of gesture in Toby Zieg…ler's paintings and sculptures. The two modes of making may seem oppositional, but at times their alliance can be a more precise way of articulating the world, as experience is, of course, neither entirely structured nor utterly visceral. In the painting The Admiral's House a section of sky quoted from a Constable painting is mapped out in patterns that recall the tiling of Mosques, like a vain and extreme attempt to extract a galleon or a human face from cloud formations and fix it as an enduring image. Technology, Ziegler seems to be reminding us, is an algorithmic approximation of the chaos of the universe and not the guiding force it sometimes appears to be. The sunsets in the diptych The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse, then, might be a comparison of before and aftermath, of vastness and its mapping, while the poplars that hold the centre of The Admiral's House with gravitas.
