Spiro Agnew (1918-1996) served as Vice President of the United States from 1969 until 1973, when he was forced from public office for accepting kickbacks from contractors. The scheme began when Agnew was the Baltimore County Executive, continued when he became the Governor of Maryland in 1966, and escalated when he became Vice President in 1968. The scheme fell apart in early 1972 when United States Attorney George Beall opened an investigation into corruption in Baltimore County, with whispers that Agnew may be involved. The story went public in 1973, with Agnew quickly losing support within the Nixon administration and ultimately resigning on October 10th. Sir William Johnson (1715-1774) was a British Army officer and Superintendent of Indiana Affairs in the American colonies. From Field: "By far the most valuable contributions to it are contained in the Appendix, in which are printed for the first time, and from the original MSS., two Journals, kept by Sir William, of expeditions to Niagara, Oswego, and Detroit, through the cantonments of the Six Nations, and the Ottawa Confederacy. An Account of the Language and Customs of the Six Nations, and, An Account of the Location and Numbers of Indian Tribes, both written by the Baronet, in the same volume." John Hay (1838-1905) served as the private secretary to President Abraham Lincoln until 1865. This rare first American edition was published in 1911, simultaneously released with the first English edition by William Heinemann in London. Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) was a renowned Norwegian explorer, scientist, and diplomat who led the first successful expedition across Greenland's interior in 1888, making significant contributions to Arctic exploration. He later developed the Nansen Passport, a document that provided stateless refugees with legal protection, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922. Nansen also made notable contributions to oceanography and zoology, enhancing the understanding of the polar regions.
