He was also appointed as the Confederate commissioner to Britain and France during the Civil War, aiming to gain European support for the Confederacy. Yancey (1814-1863), in response to the Wilmot Proviso of 1848, wrote the Alabama Platform, "a simple statement of abstract principles, a constitution designed to curb the will of the majority and preserve to the states all powers not expressly granted to the federal government . William L. Yancey and the movement for Southern independence are inseparable in history" (DAB).
