Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. 2 Volume Set, VERY GOOD, No dust jackets as issued. No marks in text. Light stain on the bottom edge of Vol II. Bindings are tight and square. 2 volumes ; illustrations ; 752pp ; 21 cm. . . . . . . A detailed account of the political, social, and personal life of William Lowndes Yancey, a prominent Southern leader during the mid-nineteenth century. This work, written by John Witherspoon Du Bose, traces Yancey's family background, his upbringing in the American South, and his rapid ascent into political prominence, especially through the nullification movement in South Carolina and his later activity in Alabama. The narrative explores key episodes in Yancey's life, such as his opposition to compromise on Southern interests, his involvement in the debates leading up to the Civil War, and his role as a passionate orator who strongly advocated for secession and the formation of the Confederate States. The set intricately describes pivotal events such as the debates over the Dred Scott decision, the Lecompton Constitution, the Charleston Convention, and the ultimate secession of Alabama. The volumes also consider Yancey's time as a Confederate diplomat in Europe, his advocacy for Southern independence, and the broader context of shifting political parties and ideologies in the United States between 1834 and 1864. The detailed portrait painted by this set makes it a valuable resource for understanding the man credited with organizing Southern political opinion toward radical change, providing both the strengths and the controversies of his legacy against the backdrop of Civil War era in America.
