It served as a new year supplement within the pages of the children's science magazine "Kodomo no Kagaku" (Science for Children), presumably issued in the latter part of the 1930s. As events unfolded, the Pacific War emerged as an air power-centric conflict, and this map adeptly illustrates the strategic positioning of air bases across Asia and the Pacific, representing various nations. The map's legend highlights air bases belonging to Britain, the US, the Soviet Union, and France, along with their corresponding flight routes. Noteworthy Australian locations such as Melbourne, Charleville, and Darwin are marked along a primary air route. Printed colour maps in all 65.5 x 99cm, the main map roughly 50 x 65 cm, on a single sheet 76 x 101.3 cms; a little carelessly folded, decorative blue title cover, a little dusty and a few fold splits and edgewear, but in good condition. The exceptional feature of this map are the twenty six large scale inset maps of Pacific islands including: Malay States, Singapore, Hong Kong (these at lower left), Japan, Philippine Islands, Hawaiian Islands, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Western and Eastern Samoa, Tahiti, Saipan, New Caledonia and Dependencies, and many others. The main map of the Pacific Ocean stretches from Southeast Asia, including all of Australia and New Zealand, the west coast of the Americas, the Kamchatka Peninsula, Manchukuo (Manchuria) and most of China. Korea and Taiwan are marked as Japanese Territory. Possessions of Britain, France, the Netherlands and the United States are highlighted. First edition, first printing, of this scarce Second World War guide to waterborne craft in and around the Dutch East Indies, compiled by British intelligence for personnel operating in the Pacific theatre. Information on the availability of local seafaring vessels offered new possibilities for Allied counter-offensives in this strategically vital region. Nine copies traced institutionally, 5 of them in Australasia. This extensively illustrated work surveys pre-war craft by location and type, with chapters on: Outriggers; Sumatra and neighbouring islands; Java, Madoera and Bali; Celebes and neighbouring islands; the Moluccas; the Lesser Sunda Islands; Borneo; New Guinea and neighbouring islands; the Solomon Islands; and Fishing and Fisheries of the Netherlands Indies. Appendices add information on Australian craft and Japanese supply ships. After the occupation of much of South East Asia in 1942, Allied forces launched several counterattacks in the region. Local fishing boats were sometimes known to contain pro-Japanese locals and agents tasked with information gathering; knowledge of these vessels was vital for countering the Japanese presence.
