The second edition thus of this work, being the second edition republished with large additions by John Throsby. The first edition of Thoroton's work was published as 'The Antiquities of Nottinghamshire' in 1677.Volume III only of a total of three volumes, lacking Volumes I and II.A brilliant county history on Nottinghamshire, exploring the vast and colourful history of the county. The author, Robert Thoroton, belonged to an old Nottinghamshire family, who took their name from the small village Thoroton.This volume covers the Thurgarton Hundred, and the Bassetlaw Hundred, including the South Clay, North Clay, and Hatfield Divisions.Illustrated with a folding map to the frontispice, an engraved title page, and twenty-six plates.Collated, all plates are present. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, boards are detached but present. Boards and spine are rubbed. Loss of leather to the joints, extremities, and spines. Front endpaper is detaching. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned with the occasional spot, mostly to the first and last few pages. Tide mark to the plates. Good Only. book.

Portrait frontis to volume 1 and folding map to volume 3. 95 plates, volume 1 is missing a plate at p73 (Roman Route). Volume 2 lacks the portrait frontis. Paper browned and scattered spotting throughout. Firmly bound. A decent set.

First edition. Folio, pp. [xvi], 507, [xxxvii] + 22 plates as called for including four leaves containing 520 coats of arms and the separate slip of eight further coats of arms. Imprimatur leaf followed by title-page in red and black, copious illustrations and genealogical tables in the text, woodcut initials and head-pieces. Occasional tiny wax marks, a few (approx. 5) repairs to bottom margins, tiny scorch hole to 2R1. Recent dark brown calf, spine ornately gilt, red and orange morocco spine labels for title, author and date, gilt borders, corner pieces and dentelles, marbled endpapers. Spine sunned, faded patch to top quarter of upper board, very good. At front, in gilt to lower turn-in 'Bound by A. Price, Oxford'. Robert Thoroton (16231678) 'commenced his Antiquities of Nottinghamshire in 1667. He first worked on some transcript notes which his father-in-law Gilbert Boun had made from Domesday Book. He assisted Sir William Dugdale in his Visitation of Nottinghamshire, 16621664. For his researches he employed paid assistants at considerable expense to himself, delving into family archives, registers (some now lost), estate papers, church monuments, and epitaphs. Like a number of county antiquaries he was little concerned with his own times, or indeed with his own century, but tried to trace the manorial history of each parish back to Domesday. He showed little interest in Roman remains, while protesting at enclosure and destruction of woods. His notes, made on the back of letters from his patients in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Derbyshire, are now in Nottingham Public Library. The folio volume of Thoroton's Antiquities was printed in London in 1677, illustrated with engravings by Hollar after Richard Hall and dedicated to Gilbert Sheldon, archbishop of Canterbury, and Dugdale, both personal friends. Dugdale wrote to the antiquary Sir Daniel Fleming, 'Dr Thoroton's book cost me 16s to 18s. I do esteem the book well worth your buying, though had he gone to the fountain of records it might have been better done' (1 Sept 1677, Le Fleming MSS, 13940). John Throsby published a reprint of Antiquities with additions, in three volumes (published 179096 but dated 1797).' (ODNB) ESTC R22553; Upcott 1047.

Internally the leaves are generally clean and amply margined, with some mild toning and foxing on occasion, frequent inscriptions in the margins and a few small marginal stains otherwise The Volume is Complete in All Respects with Imprimatur leaf, and the extra slip of heraldry (often missing), as well as numerous maps, illustrations and portraits throughout. The volume is paginated as follows: [xvi], 507, [37]. The volume collates as follows: [#]4, a, B-3R4, 3S6, 3S*-3S***4, 3S****2, 3T4. The volume measures about 34.5 cm. By 23 cm. By 4.5 cm. Each leaf measures about 335 mm. By 215 mm. Robert Thoroton belonged to an old Nottinghamshire family, which took its name from Thoroton, near Newark. He resided mainly at another village in the same neighborhood, Car Colston, where he practised as a physician and where he lived the life of a country gentleman. He took very little part in the Civil War, although his sympathies were with the royalists, but as a magistrate he was very active in taking proceedings against the Quakers. In 1667 Thoroton, aided by a band of helpers, began to work upon his great county history, The Antiquities of Nottinghamshire. This was published in London in 1677; it was dedicated to the eminent antiquarian William Dugdale and was illustrated by engravings by W. Hollar. It was Dugdale who had urged Thoroton to complete the work of history begun by Thoroton's father-in-law. In 1797 a new edition of the Antiquities was published by John Throsby, who added an additional volume. In 1897 the Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire was founded in honour of the antiquarian, its object being to promote the study of the history and antiquities of Nottinghamshire. Under its auspices annual volumes of Transactions and several volumes of Records have been published, and much valuable work has been done.
