In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, rubbed, resulting in a little loss of leather to the spine, including to the head. Spine is faded. Minor bumping to the extremities. A small amount of wear to the spine label. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots to the first and last few pages. The second edition thus of this work, being the second edition republished with large additions by John Throsby. The first edition of Thoroton's work was published as 'The Antiquities of Nottinghamshire' in 1677.Volume III only of a total of three volumes, lacking Volumes I and II.A brilliant county history on Nottinghamshire, exploring the vast and colourful history of the county. The author, Robert Thoroton, belonged to an old Nottinghamshire family, who took their name from the small village Thoroton.This volume covers the Thurgarton Hundred, and the Bassetlaw Hundred, including the South Clay, North Clay, and Hatfield Divisions.Illustrated with a folding map to the frontispice, an engraved title page, and twenty-six plates.Collated, all plates are present. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, boards are detached but present. Boards and spine are rubbed. Loss of leather to the joints, extremities, and spines. Front endpaper is detaching. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned with the occasional spot, mostly to the first and last few pages. Tide mark to the plates. Good Only. book.

Portrait frontis to volume 1 and folding map to volume 3. 95 plates, volume 1 is missing a plate at p73 (Roman Route). Volume 2 lacks the portrait frontis. Paper browned and scattered spotting throughout. Firmly bound. A decent set.

Two volumes in excellent condition, each with quarter leather binding and attractive marbled boards, externally clean and largely unmarked apart from a few faint spots. Some light bumps to corners and edges, from normal shelving & storage, but no other notable signs of wear. Both volumes bear a previous owner's inscription along with some light marginal thumb-marking and lightly-scattered spots of foxing, but are otherwise free from any significant marks. Page edges having some light rippling and toning, and some general knocks and bumps from slightly rough-cut page edges, but again remain otherwise clean and very attractive. Fold-out map at front of Supplementary Volume has some edge creasing and a few marks along fold lines and edges from relatively minor use, no major wear.
