Made by Philippe Thomassin after Martin de Vos.Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.Sheet size: 14.8 x 22.4 cm (5.83 x 8.82 inch).LIBERAL-ARTS-METAPHORIC-RHETORIC | PCO-C43-6BACKGROUND INFORMATIONThe print is part of a complete series of 7 engravings representing the liberal arts, contained in the volume marked D 22/305 and entitled: "Virtut es et, vitia bis septem una praemiis et poenis". The author of these in cisions is Thomassin, as evidenced by Gori Gandellini when, in listing his engravings, he writes that he had carved ". from the inventions of Martino de Vos the liberal arts in seven royal half-sheets" (Gori Gandellini G., v. X, p. 255). In fact, this is the artist that appears to us from an inscription on the title page of the first series of prints on 'Vices and Virtues' placed at the beginning of the aforementioned volume.Biography engraver: Philippe Thomassin (1562-1622) was a French engraver and publisher who emigrated to Rome. He was born in Troyes on 28 January 1562 and died on 12 May 1622 in Rome.Biography artist: Maerten de Vos, Maerten de Vos the Elder or Marten de Vos (1532-1603) was a Flemish painter. He is known mainly for his history and allegorical paintings and portraits. He was, together with the brothers Ambrosius Francken I and Frans Francken I, one of the leading history painters in the Spanish Netherlands after Frans Floris career slumped in the second half of the sixteenth century as a result of the Iconoclastic fury of the Beeldenstorm. De Vos was a prolific draughtsman and produced numerous designs for the Antwerp printers. These were circulated widely in Europe and the Spanish colonies and contributed to his international reputation and influence. His designs were also used as models for tapestries and stained glass windows. Condition: good, given age. Plate trimmed and attached to a carrier sheet. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
