Cloth. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Thus. Hardback. Very slight wear to D/J. Very slightly sunned spine to D/J. Price clipped. First performed about 1615, this tragicomedy provied a lasting hit with theatre audiences. When James I saw the play acted at court, he personally commissioned Middleton t…o write an anti-duelling pamphlent. Set in contemporary London, the play's sensitive discussion of the ethics of duelling ( a practice prohibited by the king) and hilarious burlesque of roaring boys gave it a great topical appeal. The main polot concerns interpretations of honour, seen in Ager's duel with the Colonel and Lady Ager's sacrifice on her son's behalf. All three 'are victims both of their own blindness and the preoocupations of the society they inhabit'. Mr. Holdsworth has based this edition on a collation of 12 of the 13 extant copies of the quarto of 1617. 130 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Campaign of the Indus.Fierce Tribesmen - and the storming of Ghuznee & Kelat. The First Afghan War is well documented, with Elphinstone's catastrophic retreat from Kabul and the destruction of an army at Gandamack as Dost Mohammed gained the throne of Afghanistan from Shah Shuja as key events. Mu…ch less well known is the totally brilliant and successful campaign that preceded it, fought by 'the Army of the Indus', which placed Shah Shuja on that throne. Two divisions from Bengal and Bombay, including British troops, experienced campaigning of the most arduous kind, fought tribesmen, overcame the Amirs of Scinde and stormed the fortresses of Ghuznee and Kelat. This story is graphically recounted by a young officer of H. M. 2nd Regiment who experienced every aspect of this fascinating episode of the early Victorian domination of the Sub-Continent.

In den WarenkorbOn a 16.5 x 20 cm piece of faded and lightly-worn light-green paper, with small diagonal cuts at corners where the item was mounted in an album. The players' names are neatly presented in a column (there is no other text on either side): 'OUCC | Greville Stevens | R. L. H. Holdsworth | J. D. Percival | V. R. Price | R C Robertso…n Glasgow | P E Lawrie | M Patten | R H Bettington | T B Raikes | L. P. Hedges | R R P Barbour'. This is the same eleven which won a match at Oxford against the Free Foresters on 20 May 1922. An all-rounder bowling leg spin and googly, the captain Greville Stevens did not fulfil his potential. He played ten matches for England between 1922 and 1930, captaining one in South Africa in 1928. Other notables include the Australian Reg Bettington, R. L. Holdsworth and R. C. Robertson-Glasgow.
