First performed about 1615, this tragicomedy provied a lasting hit with theatre audiences. When James I saw the play acted at court, he personally commissioned Middleton to write an anti-duelling pamphlent. Set in contemporary London, the play's sensitive discussion of the ethics of duelling ( a practice prohibited by the king) and hilarious burlesque of roaring boys gave it a great topical appeal. The main polot concerns interpretations of honour, seen in Ager's duel with the Colonel and Lady Ager's sacrifice on her son's behalf. All three 'are victims both of their own blindness and the preoocupations of the society they inhabit'. Mr. Holdsworth has based this edition on a collation of 12 of the 13 extant copies of the quarto of 1617. 130 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
