Ex library copy with 2 ink stamps on verso title page and ink shelf number, a…nd one page stamped "reserve" and a pale ink stamp on first pastedown, these are the only library marks. 8vo, approximately 180 x 115 mm, 7 x 4½ inches, engraved portrait frontispiece, pages: [8], 1-215, [7], lacking original front and rear blanks, bound in full contemporary calf, title label on spine rubbed with loss of gilt, blind decoration to covers, marbled endpapers. Tenison was entrusted with some of Browne's papers by his wife (Lady Dorothy) and son (Dr Edward Browne), from which he produced Certain Miscellany Tracts, fi…rst published 1682. The manuscript for Christian Morals was also in this collection of papers but wasn't published until 1716. According to the ESTC this 1684 is a 'reissue, with cancel title page, of the 1683 edition.' Includes a portrait frontispiece of Sir Thomas Browne by Peter Vandrebanc and an index at the rear, [viii], 215, [9], A4 B-P8, ESTC No. R9918. Second Edition. Bound in full contemporary speckled calf with blind ruled boards and compartments, four raised bands, speckled edges. Octavo. In good condition with scrapes to leather and a small 1cm hole on the front board, corners and edges rubbed, hinges cracked and some loss of leather at the top and tail of the spine, headbands still present but a little worn at the edges, pages generally very clean with occasional very light foxing and some light marks on p. 178, small binder error with leaf B8 folded prior to trimming, slightly oversized, textblock firm. Six compartments with five raised bands and a red lettering piece in the second compartment from the top. The binding and label typical of the very early 18th Century, along with the distinctive folding of the pastedowns. Some wear to the boards and spine, but generally quite solid. Very Good Plus. Internally fine, but with the front and rear endpapers replaced when bound in 17th / 18th C. paper. With the contemporary bookplate of Charles Barnwell. The volume measures 17.7 x 11.5 x 1.7 cm.
