Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by Modern Age Books, New York, 1941. 299 pgs. Illustrated. Second Printing. Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine and front board. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding… tight and solid. "Here is history at its informal best. The author is faithful to the facts. But it is what catches his fancy about the facts that makes such entrancing reading. Anecdote follows anecdote about the charming and childlike Hawaiians and their rulers, about the first adventurous white men to settle there, about such eminent visitors as Mark Twain and the Duke of Edinburgh, about the bitter struggle between the Men of God and the Rum-swigging, love-seeking whalers and traders§each in defense of respective versions of Paradise which ended with a law forbidding men to sleep with their women in the streets." Mr. Clark presents a fascinating selection of short subjects demonstrating his ability to empathize and present history from different vantage points. Some are perhaps not quite historically correct or morally commendable, but never the less, very interesting reading. This particular copy in very good condition with its Rare dust jacket would be a choice addition to a Hawaiiana collection. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 3 pages.
