Text is very good with scattered spotting - mainly to margins surrounding images. Gilt edges all round. An impressive and imposing volume. Text in English. Weight approximately 3.9kg (unpacked). With 13 illustrations including a folding map, collated and complete. Before detailing the mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibia, and fishes that can be found in northernmost Scotland, the authors describe its geographical position and its important physical features. Ink inscription to the front pastedown reads 'To their Grandson, Hugh Blair, on his coming of age. 13 July 2022. From Robert and Mary Blair, with best wishes.' In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, smart. A little rubbed to the front joint, with some light wear to the extremities. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, where the colour of the cloth has faded a little. Front and rear hinges starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean throughout, with a little foxing to fold out plates and the pages surrounding them. Very Good. book.

He worked first with the calotype process and later with the collodion process, then the gravure process. His work included copies of famous paintings, portraits of Glasgow University professors and a documentary series of photographs of old closes of Glasgow. His son James joined the firm in 1877 before taking over the business on the death of his father Thomas in 1887. James Annan was a pioneer of the photogravure technique, travelling to Vienna in 1883 to learn the process from it's inventor Karl Klic.

The 1871 process was calotype, 1877, carbon, and 1900 a gravure process. The City Improvement Trust was the body which was charged with the task of cleaning up the squalid living conditions that existed in the city in the second half of the nineteenth century. Learning from visits to Paris, to see the work of Baron Haussmann, the trustees were very successful in adapting the traditional tenement house style to rehouse many thousands of people. This edition was limited to 100 copies.

Thomas Annan was commissioned by the Glasgow Water Works Corporation to document the project of redirecting the waters from Loch Katrine to flow some thirty-five miles into the city of Glasgow - a feat of engineering that took almost twenty years. Annan published his first major work 'The Views of the Line of Loch Katrine Water Works' in 1859 and continued to photograph the evolution of the aqueduct and construction works until completion in 1877. 'Photographic Views of Loch Katrine' was published to chronicle this work and mark the historic completion of the enterprise. Brown/gilt hardback leather cover.

The list of portraits has been greatly extended so as to comprehend not only those contained in the earlier volume but also portraits of the [current] Chancellor, the Members of the University Court, the Rector, the Principal, and others, including all the Professors who have held office since the new buildings were opened." "Days at the Coast", a poetic travelogue of locations around the the Firth of Clyde*, by Glasgow-area writer Hugh MacDonald (1817-1860) was first issue in 1857 and became a local bestseller. A number of subsequent editions were issued over next twenty years, but the most sought after and scarce of these is this very special edition issued in 1865, which most notably includes 12 original evocative landscape photographs of the area by pioneering Scottish photographer Thomas Annan (18291887). Each image (including the frontispiece) is captioned underneath, mounted on heavy stock paper and protected with a tissue guard. Text throughout is printed in a two-column format. A table of contents and a list of photographs are included at the front of the book. Binding with minor rubbing and bumping to the corners. Interior with some sporadic foxing and water stains, most notably in the initial few pages. In most other cases its confined to the margins. Images are vibrant and mostly clean overall. Binding in very good+, interior in very good condition overall. Binding protected in modern mylar. Extremely scarce with only 2 OCLC holdings worldwide for this special photographically illustrated edition of the work. *By the late 19th century the spelling "firth" for the same word had become most commonly used.
