In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Very good. Exhibits light wear along original fold lines. Exhibits some foxing and light soiling. Verso repair to fold separation. Remargined on left side. Blank on verso. Size 16 x 26.5 Inches. This is an 1869 William Chandless map of the Juruá River. The map divides the Juruá into two sections. The upper map illustrates the Juruá from its confluence with the Amazon to a point near Lake Ocoá. The lower map illustrates the upper portion of the river from Lake Ocoá to the point where the expedition reversed course. Small black crosses mark astronomical observations, and the dashed lines indicate the mouth of a lake or tributary. Chandless includes comments on the nature of the tributaries, and also notes the locations of the few tribal villages he encountered. The Chandless Expedition and the Juruá River The Juruá is 1,500 miles long and navigable for 1,133 miles above its confluence with the Amazon. Chandless surveyed 980 miles before his crew, for fear of Amazon Indian attack, compelled the expedition to turn around. Even though Chandless did not reach the Juruá's source, this expedition provided the first significant science-based reconnaissance of the river, its banks, and its course. Publication History and Census This map was created by William Chandless and Edward Weller and published by John Murray for the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1869. We are aware of one other instance when the separate map appeared on the private market. References: OCLC 494896313.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Good. Edge wear. Closed edge tears professionally repaired on verso. Slight edge chipping. Some toning. Size 24 x 124.5 Inches. This is a 1906 Carlos Hoempler and Pedro Portillo Silva 10 1/2 foot-long map covering over 1,000 miles of the Amazon River, from Iquitos, Peru, to Manaus, Brazil - highlighting a primary artery of the Amazon Rubber Boom (1879 - 1912). When issued, it was by far the most detailed map of this part of the Amazon River yet produced, illustrating navigation and commerce in one of the world's most extreme climates. A Closer Look The map covers the Amazon River from Iquitos, Peru, to Manaus, Brazil. The mouths of tributaries and lakes that connect to the river and settlements are identified. Of significance is a red line describing the most navigable deepwater channel, reflecting the practical secrets to traversing the dangerous river. Hoempler drafted the map from information compiled by the Peruvian explorer Petro Portillo Silva and the Booth and Company Steamship Company, a cornerstone of Amazon commerce at the turn of the 20th century. Rubber Boom This map was produced at the peak of the Amazon Rubber Boom, for which both Iquitos and Manaus were key ports. Starting around 1879, the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the automobile created an insatiable global demand for rubber. Rubber trees ( Hevea brasiliensis ) produce a natural latex coveted by rubber and tire producers. At the outset of the boom, rubber trees grew naturally only deep in the Amazon rainforest, where latex collection was a dangerous and labor-intensive process. Nonetheless, the persistent need for rubber and the harsh demands of the environment that produced it led to the rise of rubber barons defined by fast fortunes, horrific cruelty, and outlandish excess. Tales of rubber barons bringing European opera troops and ballet companies deep into the rainforest, building personal menageries of exotic animals, and other extravagances, were commonplace. So, too, were tales of their atrocities, specifically the enslavement and murder of thousands of indigenous Amazonian tribespeople. Responding to the need, British investors developed vast plantations in their East India colonies, particularly Malaysia and Borneo, which were able to produce latex more efficiently, leading to a sudden collapse in the global rubber market. As quickly as the rubber boom came, it also vanished, and along with it, the fortunes it created. Booth and Company Booth and Company (1863 - 1986) was a British shipping and trading company, founded in Liverpool as Alfred Booth and Company by brothers Alfred and Charles Booth. At first, the company exported English light leather to the United States, which was then fighting the American Civil War (1861 - 1865). In 1866, the brothers expanded service to South America, offering regular steamship service from Liverpool to ports in northern Brazil and along the Amazon. The rubber trade from Brazil increased after Dunlop invented his pneumatic tire in 1888, which caused an increase in Booth's service to and from Brazil. In 1901, Booth merged with one of its major competitors, the Red Cross Iquitos Steamship Company. Following the merger, the company changed its name to Booth Steamship Co. Ltd. and extended service to Iquitos, Peru. Booth suffered during World Wars I and II, when the government requisitioned many of its ships for war service. After World War II, the company modernized its fleet and expanded to the Caribbean. The company subdivided into several divisions in the 1960s, and the separate parts were fully liquidated by the 1980s. Publication History and Census This map was created by Carlos E.C. Hoempler and printed and published by Carlos Fabbri in Lima in 1906. In den WarenkorbGood. Foxing throughout, more prominent in the margins and along centerfold. Size 9.24 x 14.25 Inches. A fine example of Rigobert Bonne's c. 1788 map of northern Brazil, which appeared in his and Nicolas Desmarest's Atlas Encyclopedique . It focuses on the Amazon River and its tributaries as well as the mountainous interior further to the south. A Closer Look This detailed map features the northern portion of Brazil from Bahia to Guyana, including the lower portion of the Amazon River and its adjacent rainforest. Rivers, lakes, mountains, settlements, indigenous tribes, and administrative divisions are noted throughout. Both the Ferro and Paris Meridian are included, along with six different scales. Of note is the legendary Lake Parime in the northwest. It was on the shores of this lake that many explorers mistakenly believed they could find the city of Manoa, or El Dorado. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Rigobert Bonne and engraved by André, about whom little is known. It appeared as map No. 107 in Volume II of Bonne and Nicolas Desmarest's Atlas Encyclopedique , a very successful atlas that went through several editions in the late 18th century. The map is similar though not identical to Bonne's earlier c. 1780 map in his and Guillame Thomas Raynal's Atlas de Toutes les Parties Connues du Globe Terrestre . As the subtitle suggests, it was paired with Feuille II (No. 106), covering a portion of the Atlantic coast of South America extending south to Buenos Aires, which somewhat confusingly directly preceded it in the atlas. The present map is only independently cataloged (as part of the pair) among the holdings of the University of California Los Angeles and DePaul University, while the entire Atlas Encyclopedique is more widely distributed among universities and research institutions. In den WarenkorbVery good. Some toning and wear along original centerfold. Minor foxing. Original platemark visible. Size 18 x 13 Inches. A beautiful example of Rigobert Bonne's c.1778 decorative map of Peru. Covers the western parts of South America from just north of the Equator south as far as the Tropic of Capricorn. Includes the modern day nations of Peru, Ecuador (here called Quito), Bolivia, and parts of adjacent Brazil, Columbia, Chile and Argentina. Offers excellent detail throughout showing mountains, rivers, national boundaries, cities, regions, and tribes. Curiously, this map identifies the 'Ancienne demeure des Manaos.' This was once a great trading empire was centered along the Rio Negro in the Amazon Basin. The Manoa traded from Peru to the Orinoco. There were perhaps most famously encountered by Sir Walter Raleigh in Guyana while on an annual trading expedition to the region. Raleigh, seeing the gold artifacts carried by the traders immediately assumed they must be from El Dorado. He asked local tribesmen who they were and where they came from. The locales responded that they crossed a great lake and came from a rich land called Manoa. Though at the time Raleigh did not explore this further, he did later write that he discovered the great city of Manoa, capital of El Dorado, on a vast lake in Guyana. No doubt Raleigh intended to return to South America but was prevented from doing so by his unfortunate beheading back in England. As a result of Raleigh's guess work, the Lake of Parima and city of Manoa would appear for several hundred years on maps of northern South America. A large decorative title cartouche appears in the lower left quadrant. Drawn by R. Bonne for issue as plate no. B 34 in Jean Lattre's Atlas Moderne . References: Rumsey 2612.078. In den Warenkorb1st Edition. Very good. Some offsetting present. Size 13 x 19.5 Inches. This intriguing c. 1903 map of a portion of the Amazon River in Brazil's State of Pará was produced by Paul Georges Aimé Le Cointe, a naturalist and botanist active in Brazil in the early 20th century. A Closer Look The map covers an area around Lagoa de Sapucuá and the Trombetas River, a tributary of Amazon, near Óbidos, the point generally considered to be the transition between the middle and lower Amazon River basin. Given its innumerable islands, islets, marshes, and other bits of land intermingled with the river, this portion of the Amazon is notoriously difficult to navigate (the sinking of the ferry Sobral Santos II at Óbidos is one of the worst maritime disasters in Brazil's history). These features, which tended to change frequently, both seasonally and permanently, also have made the region very difficult to accurately map, as Le Cointe points out in the article which accompanied this map. He was extremely diligent in noting terrain, areas of elevation, settlements, mineral resources, and waterways, as well as established overland routes, the trail of his own exploratory trek, and telegraph lines, partially laid out by Le Cointe himself in 1892 - 1893. Le Cointe is known to history as a botanist, primarily, and secondly as a sort of early conservationist. His motivations here, though somewhat oblique, included promoting European (and specifically French) immigration to this region of the Amazon. The 'colony' marked to the north of Óbidos, ephemeral if it ever materialized at all, is not much discussed in Le Cointe's article, though he does include a photograph of 'preparatory work' (felling trees) and also touts the suitability of some of the grasslands near the Amazon for raising livestock. This map was produced at the height of the Amazon rubber boom (or cycle) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when large numbers of European immigrants were arriving to work plantations along the Amazon. Belém, at the mouth of the Amazon, and Manaus, a bit upriver from the area seen here, both saw an influx of new arrivals. Óbidos did not become a metropolis like them, but it did see considerable development, including the arrival of electricity and running water, becoming the first interior city along the Amazon to have such amenities. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by Paul Georges Aimé Le Cointe based on surveys undertaken over several years in the 1890s, while he was engaged in work laying telegraph lines and delimiting property in the Amazon basin. It accompanied an article by Le Cointe titled 'Le Bas Amazone' published in the 61st edition of the Annales de Géographie in 1903. The map is only independently cataloged by the Boston Public Library, while the Annales de Géographie is more widely distributed in institutional collections. In den WarenkorbVery good condition; some toning to right margin well away from image; full margins and no repairs. Size 7 x 15 Inches. This is a fascinating 1780 map of the Amazon river basin, spanning the breadth of the South American continent, embracing Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. It displays the mapping of the great river produced in 1743 by the French Geodesic Mission under Charles Marie de La Condamine, which still represented the state of the art. This exhaustive mapping of the Amazon and its tributaries is shown overlaying another map of the Amazon, this one executed in 1707 by the Jesuit Father Samuel Fritz. His mapping of the Amazon had been the first accurate one to be produced, and so to have it compare so poorly to Condamine's was to present a flourish on behalf of modern, French scientific geography. Goals of the The French Geodesic Mission: Earth! Just How Round Is It, Anyway? Led by Charles Marie de La Condamine, the Geodesic Mission was intended to determine whether Newton's theory on the oblate nature of the globe - that it was not truly spherical, but slightly flattened at the poles (narrower from pole to pole than across the equator). Scientists disagreed: Cassini, for example, theorized that the distance was greater at the poles. To resolve the issue, it would be necessary to measure a degree of arc near the Equator, measure a degree of arc nearer the North Pole, and compare the two. Condamine's part of the project was to survey a measurable length of a meridian along the equator. This required that Condamine and his colleagues precisely survey a length of the high valleys of the Andes - literally the only place in the world where such a survey was practicable in the 1730s. Ultimately, the project determined that the Earth is indeed not perfectly spherical but is oblate, i.e. flattened at the poles - as per Newton. Publication History and Census The separate map appears on the market from time to time but is neglected in institutional collections: OCLC lists only four examples. La Harpe's Abrégé de l'histoire générale des voyages is well represented in institutions, however. References: OCLC 163341299. …

In den WarenkorbVery good. Darkened at centerfold, else a bright, attractive example. Size 8.5 x 13.5 Inches. This scarce 1728 Stöcklein map of the Amazon River is among the earliest acquirable maps based upon actual exploration to illustrate the full course of the Amazon River from the Andes to the Atlantic. The map is derived from the surveys of Samuel Fritz, a Czech Jesuit missionary who lived and worked in South America for over forty years. As a result of surveys intended to settle a border dispute, Fritz was able to determine the correct sources for the Marañón River, the primary source of the Amazon itself. The map shows forts, cities, and differentiates those cities with bishoprics and archbishoprics. Special notations on the map mark locations of the source of the Marañón 'as it is indicated on old maps,' and a further notation marks 'Die Insel Guar' in the middle of the Amazon. Fritz's Mission Fritz was a Czech Jesuit who was assigned by the Jesuit governance in Quito to expand the Maynas Mission into Omagua territory, roughly located between the Rio Napo and the Rio Negro. The Jesuit 'IHS' seal near the center of the map highlights the area in which Fritz was most active and successful. This area was a hotly contested and ill-defined region between Spanish territory administered from Quito and Portuguese Brazil. Although the division between Spanish and Portuguese territory in the New World had long been defined by the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas, deep in the rainforest, formal boundaries were ill-defined and impossible to enforce. Fritz's Survey Although the coverage of the map takes in the full course of the Amazon, Fritz only personally explored the western portion. The most detailed parts of the map, and thus its focus, are the southwest territories this is where Fritz did most of his missionary work. The lands to the east of center were controlled by competing Portuguese mission groups. The cartography for these areas was derived from Portuguese missionary maps, long lost, which were acquired by Fritz on an 1689 - 1691 spy mission to the Portuguese city of Belém do Pará. Publication History and Census The source for this map, Samuel Fritz's 1707 El Gran Rio Marañon o Amazonas Con la Mission de la Compañia de Iesus, is virtually unobtainable with only one known example having appeared in the trade. A c. 1712 Moll map using this cartography exists, and a 1717 French edition has been seen on the market. This example was printed by the Jesuit Joseph Stöcklein for inclusion in his 1728 Neuer Welt-Bott, a work chronicling the works of the Society of Jesus around the world. Fritz's contributions would have been unignorable: partially for his cartographic work, but more pointedly for the lifetime of missionary work in the Amazon river basin that made it possible. In den WarenkorbVery good. Few creases, else excellent with generous margins. Size 11 x 18 Inches. This is Vincenzo Maria Coronelli's beautiful and fascinating map of the northern parts of South America, focusing specifically on the Amazon River and the interior of Brazil and Peru. A Closer Look The map spans from the Pacific coast of Peru to the Atlantic; part of the Atlantic coast of Brazil is revealed, as is the northern coast of South America spanning from Panama Guiana, and northern Brazil. The courses of the Orinoco and Amazon rivers dominate. The Amazon River is shown from an indeterminate source in Ecuador to its mouth. At the southern extreme, the headwaters of the Paraguay River are identified as Lago Xarayes. In addition to its depiction of the region's rivers, the map is filled with Coronelli's characteristic vignettes capturing the indigenous population in activities spanning sugar harvesting and processing, war, hunting, and cannibalism. There also appear depictions of animals: a pair of tapirs, a crane-like bird with a fantastic tropical plant, and lions. Laguna de Xarayes The mythical Laguna de Xarayes is illustrated here as the northern terminus, or source, of the Paraguay River. The Xarayes, a corruption of 'Xaraies' meaning 'Masters of the River', were an indigenous people occupying what are today parts of Brazil's Matte Grosso and the Pantanal. El Dorado? The region between the Orinoco and the Amazon were thought by Europeans, going back to the sixteenth century, to hide a supposed kingdom of gold, El Dorado; Raleigh's expedition encountered the vast Parima flood plain, which resembled a great inland sea offering trade connections between the two great rivers; gold trinkets amongst the indigenous peoples there convinced Raleigh that they originated from the fabled El Dorado. Many cartographers throughout the seventeenth century presented Parima as a massive lake, with the city of El Dorado or Manoa on its shores. Coronelli includes the lake but not the city of gold, adding a note that the lake was now believed a fable.
