He will be too busy over the following days to visit Clark in person, 'and so I send you the first act of the MSS I talked to you about - I may say I read the 1st. act one afternoon to Miss Terry who wanted to take it to Webster - but I was disinclined'. If Clark 'had anything to do with it - the Blacksmith would be the [last word underlined] part'. He asks Clark to return it as soon as he can: 'as this is the American copy - and they expect it (but of course won't get it) by next mail'.

The panorama showed scenes in Cairo, Phil , Nazareth, the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee, Damascus, Baalbec, Beirut, Istanbul, and St. George's Chapel, Windor, during the marriage of the Prince of Wales to Princess Alexander of Denmark.

In den WarenkorbSee her entry in the Oxford DNB. On two 11 x 9 cm cards, plain but for the letterhead. Both in good condition, lightly aged. The recipient is not named. The card is signed 'E. T:' and is written in her forceful hand. Begins: 'I have no time - nor words - to tell you "what I think" - "The boys health" indeed! - if there's any use in talking, if signing petitions will do any good one would talk & sign all day! but in spite' - here the reverse of the first card begins, and the side is entirely deleted, except for the last line'. The deleted passage continues from the first side: 'of all protests I feel it in my bones the thing is inevitable money is at the bottom of it all - this is a vulgar age, & all beauty is being chased from off the Earth The Cathedrals will be a Grand [pill?] for the despoiler'. The undeleted text continues: ' 'I will sign any protest you may make against the wicked deed: - but it comes under no Act at all, & it means money & hypocrisy the [whole thing?]'. She concludes by explaining that she is 'trying to write two notes, & three good souls are talking to me at the same time.' Postscript: 'Have you influence I wonder in "Military Circles"? I have none -'. See Image, pp.1 & 4.

Elen Terry writes below, "And I am Nell! Nell of the old Lyceum! - and sister-in-law of Julia Neilson - the good & beautiful. | Ellen Terry [underlined] = Southport = 19-April - 1904 =". Note: Neilson starred in 'Sweet Nell of Old Drury' by Paul Kester but I have yet to find out which "Nell" Ellen Terry played unless, as seems likely, she's making a play on her own name. SEE IMAGE.

unbound. Interesting letter written within days of her arrival back to England from her successful American tour. 2 pages (front and back), 8 x 5 inches, London, May 13, 1884. Written to Mr. Shaw, who might very well be George Bernard Shaw, with the first exchange of letters between the two iconic theater personalities, in full: "So very many thanks for your kind welcome and congratulations. Mr. Irving and myself are wonderfully well after our hard work, but American kindliness has lightened our load, & our English welcome of love has entirely cured our fatigue." According to his biographers, Shaw was in London in 1883 and had already developed an association with William Archer, one of London's leading theater critics. In 1884 Shaw remained in London, became a member of the Fabian Society, and was friendly with the Reviewing staff of The Pall Mall Gazette. Within a few months he would join its staff as a theater critic, securing his first job in journalism. In addition, he attended many theater performances with Archer, so it makes perfect sense that he might take the time out to congratulate, perhaps, the greatest star of the English stage, on her successful American Tour. Natural folds and light creasing; very good(+) condition. English stage performer who became the leading Shakespearean actress in Britain. In 1878 she entered into a business partnership with Sir Henry Irving and reopened the Lyceum Theatre to great acclaim. Her correspondance with George Bernard Shaw, described as a courtship, starting in 1892 and published in 1931, three years after her death, remains a topic of interest in the theater world.

framed. Zustand: near fine. Signed with "Good Wishes" inscription from English actors Ellen Terry and Henry Irving in 1902. Framed with portrait images of both Terry and Irving. Please inquire for more information. Dame Alice Ellen Terry was a leading English actress of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born into a family of actors, Terry began performing as a child, acting in Shakespeare plays in London, and toured throughout the British provinces in her teens. At 16, she married the 46-year-old artist George Frederic Watts, but they separated within a year. She soon returned to the stage but began a relationship with the architect Edward William Godwin and retired from the stage for six years. She resumed acting in 1874 and was immediately acclaimed for her portrayal of roles in Shakespeare and other classics. *** Sir Henry Irving, christened John Henry Brodribb, sometimes known as J. H. Irving, was an English stage actor in the Victorian era, known as an actor-manager because he took complete responsibility (supervision of sets, lighting, direction, casting, as well as playing the leading roles) for season after season at the West End's Lyceum Theatre, establishing himself and his company as representative of English classical theatre. In 1895 he became the first actor to be awarded a knighthood, indicating full acceptance into the higher circles of British society.
