Introduction by Francesca Wade. New York: New York Review of Books, 2023, 1st printing number line ending with 1, xii, 226pp., . Series: New York Review Books classics "Susan Taubes (1928-1969), born Judit Zsuzsanna Feldmann in Budapest, was the daughter of a psychoanalyst and the granddaughter of a rabbi. She and her father emigrated to the United States in 1939, settling in Rochester, New York. She attended Bryn Mawr as an undergraduate, and in 1949 married the rabbinically trained scholar Jacob Taubes. Taubes studied philosophy and religion in Jerusalem, at the Sorbonne, and at Radcliffe, where she wrote her dissertation on Simone Weil. She and her husband had a son and a daughter, in 1953 and 1957, and in 1960 she began teaching at Columbia University, where she was curator of the Bush Collection of Religion and Culture. During the 1960s, Taubes was a member of the experimental Open Theater ensemble; edited volumes of Native American and African folktales; published a dozen short stories; and wrote two novels, Divorcing and the still-unpublished Lament for Julia. Her suicide came shortly after the publication of Divorcing, in November 1969. Two collections of Taubes's extensive correspondence with Jacob while they lived apart in the early 1950s were published in Germany in 2014: the letters appear in their original English with German annotation" - CONTENTS: Lament for Julia -- The patient -- The sharks -- A fatal disease -- Dr. Rombach's daughter -- Medea -- Easter visit -- The gold chain -- Swan -- The last dance. paperback. Zustand: Fine. DETAILS: sewn PAPERBACK, fresh attractive copy, essentially like new copy, fine condition. NAUERT JR., CHARLES G. Humanism and the culture of Renaissance Europe. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2003, x, 237pp., . Series: New approaches to European history, 6 The European Renaissance has attracted a wealth of scholarly literature on its different aspects, but few generalized accounts. This new textbook provides students with a highly readable synthesis of the major determining features of one of the most influential cultural revolutions in history. Italy has traditionally dominated any study of the Renaissance, but the approach of this book is broader, and tackles its themes in a way not previously attempted in the wider European context, charting not only the dramatic Italian experience of humanism, but its dissemination throughout northern Europe. Professor Nauert traces the humanist 'movement' from its origins in medieval culture and through the appropriation of classical Antiquity, and connects it to the social and political environments in which it subsequently developed., In a tour-de-force of lucid exposition over six wide-ranging chapters, Nauert charts the key intellectual, social, educational and philosophical concerns of this humanist revolution, using Renaissance art and short biographical sketches of key figures to illuminate the discussion. While other studies of humanism have concentrated on origins and early diffusion, this one also traces subsequent transformations of humanism and its solvent effect on intellectual developments in the late Renaissance. - CONTENTS: 1. The birth of humanist culture -- 2. Humanism and Italian society -- 3. Crossing the Alps -- 4. Triumph and disaster -- 5. Humanism and High-Renaissance culture -- 6. Humanism and the end of the Renaissance. 9780521407243 ISBN 0521407249.
