Hardcover. Small 4to. Tan cloth spine with paper label and blue paper over boards. 82pp. Very good. Mild bit of edgewear a bit of soiling. Tight, decent first edition of this annual publication. This volume includes an introduction by Hay as well as McLaughlin's "Lincoln, the Constitution and Democracy" and Smith's "A Philosophe…r Looks at Lincoln." Best of all, the front flyleaf bears a nice bold contemporary presentation inscription from Abraham Lincoln Association board of directors member Arthur D. Mackie (general superintendent of the Springfield Utility Company and the Central Illinois Light Company): "To / D.M. Mackie / With my compliments / No can write any more / A.D.M." The title page also bears the modern ownership signature of James Hurt (1934-2010), University of Illinois literature professor and author of the 1992 "Writing Illinois: The Prairie, Lincoln, and Chicago.".

Hardcover. Small 4to. Quarter tan cloth spine with paper spine label and blue paper over boards. 82pp. Uncut. Near fine. Text block faintly age toned per usual. Tight, handsome first edition of this annual publication, limited to 1000 copies. ALA president Hay introduces this pair of essays, with McLaughlin addressing "Lincoln,…the Constitution and Democracy" and Smith "A Philosopher Looks at Lincoln." Begun in 1924, this annual was for many years titled "Lincoln Centennial Association Papers." From the library of Illinois governor, twice Democratic presidential candidate and well-known Lincoln lover Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), whose large rubberstamped ownership signature appears on the front flyleaf; he also appears on page 75 among the Illinois ALA members. Quite a choice copy. MONAGHAN 3550.
