  • Pappe. Zustand: Sehr gut. 341 S. : zahlr. Ill. Szyk's magnificent visual interpretation of the books of Job. Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) was a graphic artist, book illustrator, stage designer and caricaturist. He was born into a Jewish family in Lodz, in the part of Poland which was under Russian rule in the 19th century. He always regarded himself both as a Pole and a Jew. From 1921, he lived and created his works mainly in France and Poland, and in 1937 moved to the United Kingdom. In 1940, he settled permanently in the United States, where he was granted American citizenship in 1948. Szyk is best known for his political drawings, namely of Hitler during his rise to power, as well as for his magnificent Haggadah, which was published in London in 1940 and was dedicated by Szyk to King George VI. The work was widely acclaimed by critics; according to The Times, it was 'Worthy to be placed among the most beautiful of books that the hand of man has ever produced'. The Book of Job is part of the Ketuvim ('Writings'), the third section of the Hebrew Bible. It tells the story of Job whose righteousness and faith in God are tested by a succession of terrible personal disasters.

'The book is a masterpiece, one that should increase the happiness of every one of its possessors, who will find new interest and new delight every time he opens its pages' (The Jewish Chronicle). This copy was given as a Rosh Hashanah present by Mr Cyril Joshua Ross (1891-1973) to Prof. Samson Wright (a renowned British medical physiologist). Both men were leading Zionist figures in London's Jewish community during the mid-20th century. The short typed letter inserted in the book reads: 'Dear Professor Wright, / will you accept this gift (I can think of no more appropriate one to send you) as a token of my regard for you and your work in the community. I know in sending it that you will treasure it and add it to your library of outstanding works. / I take this opportunity of wishing you and your family a very happy New Year, in which Mrs. Ross joins me. / Yours sincerely, Cyril.' Arthur Szyk (1894-1951), a Polish-Jewish artist, produced works characterised by social and political comment, and in their formal aspect - by the rejection of modernism and drawing on the traditions of medieval and renaissance painting, especially illuminated manuscripts from those periods. Unlike most caricaturists, Szyk always showed great attention to the colour effects and details in his works. Szyk's drawings and paintings became even more politically engaged when Hitler took power in Germany in 1933. Szyk started drawing Führer's caricatures as early as 1933; probably, the first work of the artist directed against the leader of the Third Reich was a drawing of Hitler, made in pencil, in which he was shown as a new pharaoh. These drawings anticipated the present great series of Szyk's arts â" The Haggadah, his magnum opus. Szyk illustrated it in 48 drawings in the years 1932-1938, and the development of the political situation in Germany at that time made him introduce some contemporary elements to it. These referred to, in particular, the parable of the four sons, in which the 'wicked son' was portrayed as a man wearing German clothes, with a Hitler-like moustache. The expression of the series was even stronger in its original version: the drawings showed snakes with swastikas, there were also heads of Hermann Gà ring and Joseph Goebbels. In 1937, Arthur Szyk went to London to supervise the publication of The Haggadah. However, the artist had to agree to many compromises during the work which lasted three years, including painting over all of the swastikas. It is not clear whether he did it as a result of the pressure by his publisher or the British politicians, who pursued the policy of appeasement in relation to Germany. Finally, The Haggadah was published in London in late 1940 (and not 1939, which is the date of Szyk's opening words; see Roth); the artist dedicated it to King George VI. The work was widely acclaimed by critics; according to The Times, it was 'worthy to be placed among the most beautiful of books that the hand of man has ever produced'. Yudlov 3712; Yaari 2285.

Music box to be hanged on the wall with a colour lithograph print by Szyk to its front; box size: 32 x 27 x 9 cm; string-pull mechanism and music playback in perfect working order; minor imperfections to the wooden panels. Wooden music box playing 'Hatikvah' with Szyk's colour lithograph titled 'The visual history of Israel', from the 'Visual history of nations' series, to its front. The series of nine works dating from 1945 to 1949 was commissioned by Kasimir Bileski (1908-2005), a Canadian philatelist and entrepreneur. The series was originally called the 'United Nations series', because each of the nine prints portrays the visual history of a founding or member country of the United Nations. The other nations included in the series were the United States of America, Canada, Poland, Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, China and Switzerland. The lithographs were intended to be used as title pages for a unique international stamp album and were printed from watercolour and gouache illuminations. Hatikvah (meaning 'the hope') is the national anthem of the State of Israel. It is based on a 1878 poem by Naftali Herz Imber and a 1888 melody by Samuel Cohen. Arthur Szyk (1894-1951), a Polish-Jewish artist, produced works characterised in their material content by social and political commitment, and in their formal aspect by the rejection of modernism and drawing on the traditions of medieval and renaissance painting, especially illuminated manuscripts from those periods. Szyk worked primarily as a book illustrator and political artist throughout his career and always showed great attention to the colour effects and details in his works. Szyk's drawings and paintings became even more politically engaged when Hitler took power in Germany in 1933. Szyk illustrated it in 48 drawings in the years 1932-1938, moving to London in 1937 to supervise its publication. In July 1940 Szyk moved to North America, with the support of the British government and the Polish government-in-exile, on assignment to popularise the struggle of the British and Polish nations against Nazism. He ended up settling in New Canaan, Connecticut, and in subsequent years illustrated a number of works on Jewish themes, such as 'Pathways through the Bible' by Mortimer J. Cohen (1946), 'The Book of Job' (1946), 'The Book of Ruth' (1947), 'The Ten Commandments' (1947), 'The Story of Joseph and his Brother's (1949) and others.

Later trade edition. A special copy of the 1957 trade edition bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in the deluxe full morocco binding of the original edition of 1939. Large quarto (10 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches; 268 x 210 mm). Printed in black, sanguine, purple, blue, red, and green inks on [56] double-folded leaves. Fourteen full-page and numerous vignettes and border decorations printed in color. Text in English and Hebrew on facing pages (the illustrations are on the Hebrew pages). ?The illustrations contained herein are reproductions of originals of Arthur Szyk of New-Canaan, Connecticut, U.S.A. Engraved by The Sun Engraving Co., England? (verso of title-page). Publisher?s full blue morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed in gilt on the front turn-in). Covers with gilt triple fillet border, front cover stamped in gilt with a large emblem of a high priest holding the matzoh and Passover wine, spine decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, board edges with gilt dotted rule, turn-ins decoratively tooled in gilt, Szyk?s illustration of Moses supporting the Ten Commandments printed monochromatically on cream paper and mounted as doublures. A very fine copy. ?During many of his years of travel, Szyk had been working on a large project of illumination, The Haggadah. The work took on a special meaning in light of the then growing anti-Semitism in Europe. Passover is a festival of freedom, and The Haggadah tells the story of Jewish liberation from slavery in Egypt. In order to heighten the topical message and relate the historical events to contemporary ones, Szyk emblazoned the Egyptians with the Nazi swastika. However, fearing reprisals, publishers on the continent would not touch the book as long as it included this symbol? Szyk removed the swastika, believing that the underlying message of the book was still clear and it was more important to see the project through to publication. "A deluxe volume in a limited edition of 250 copies was published in 1940 by the Beaconsfield Press in London. Bound in gold-stamped leather, with end pages printed on silk, the full color illuminations are printed on double-leaf parchment and an English translation is matched to the Hebrew text. While the pages of English are decorated with small, intricate, sepia-toned emblems, the emphasis in on the illuminated Hebrew pages and the brilliant colors and striking combinations which are jewel-like in affect. This book was amongst the most expensive new publications ? in 1940 the price in the USA was $525 and in the UK 100 Guineas (?105.00). "One contemporary reviewer [?The Haggadah?A Sumptuous Illustrated Edition,? The Times Literary Supplement, 22 February 1941, p. 9] called it ?worthy to be placed among the most beautiful of books that the hand of man has produced? The first copy of the printing was presented to George VI, King of England, to whom the book is dedicated? (Ungar, Justice Illuminated: The Art of Arthur Szyk, pp. 80-81).

Front flyleaf inscribed in ink: "To Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Brachman / very cordially / Arthur Szyk / New York. April 1945." Very faint naturally occurring variations in the grain of the vellum, otherwise a pristine copy. With an important Holocaust-related authorial inscription, this is a very fine copy of what the London Times described as "a book worthy to be placed among the most beautiful of books that the hand of man has produced." Arthur Szyk (1894-1951), a Polish Jew, is considered by scholars to be the greatest 20th century illuminator. Using the style of the Medieval illuminated manuscript artists, he has here created a Haggadah for Passover that is at once a beautiful book of devotion, a political protest against the rise of Nazism, and a plea for England's help for the Jews of Europe. By 1939, Szyk's anti-Nazi cartoons had caused Hitler to put a price on his head, forcing him to flee to England. His original illustrations for his "Haggadah," featuring the villains of the Exodus with the heads of Hitler, Goebbels, and other leading Nazis, had to be toned down before publication. All 46 pages of the Hebrew text are illustrated with scenes from the Passover story, as well as vignettes of Jewish life in modern Europe?sometimes Szyk mixes the two to great effect. Perhaps the most moving illustration in the book is the elaborately illustrated dedication to King George VI of England, appealing for his mercy to European Jews. The great symbols of the British Empire?the lion and unicorn, St. George defeating the dragon?surround Szyk's plea to the king: "At the feet of your most gracious majesty I humbly lay these works of my hands, shewing forth the affliction of my people Israel." In the lower right corner of the painting, we see Jewish refugees beside one of the ships which were usually turned away from British shores, while Szyk depicts himself leaning against the painting, his brush and easel in hand. The text here is enriched by the historical introduction and the commentary contributed by Cecil Roth (1899-1970), the preeminent British expert on Jewish history. This crowning achievement of Szyk's life was four years in the making, and has proved to be an enduring treasure. Szyk presented this copy to Texas oilfield supply magnate Solomon "Sol" Brachman (1896-1974) and his wife Etta. The son of a Latvian Jew, Brachman was the founding president of the Jewish Federation of Fort Worth in 1936, and helped arrange an emergency $100,000 bank loan for Israel on the eve of statehood in 1948. His wife, who served as president of the National Council of Jewish Women, was known as "the mother of Hadassah." Szyk's 1945 inscription was no doubt especially meaningful to this devout family, whose Latvian relatives were among the 90 percent of that country's Jews who perished in the Holocaust. No. 72 OF 125 COPIES SIGNED BY THE ARTIST AND THE EDITOR for sale in the British Empire.
