An epic of love and adultery, money and power, set amid the revolutionary turbulence of twentieth-century China, from the author of Manchu and Mandarin. Founder of the Sekloong dynasty of Hong Kong, Sir Jonathan, the illegitimate offspring of an Irish adventurer and his Chinese mistress, overcame colonial prejudice to build a vast and influential trading empire spanning half a century. The marriage of Sir Jonathan's profligate son Charles to the ambitious and beautiful Mary Osgood comes to embody, on both personal and political levels, the tensions between Orient and Occident, and between Nationalists and Communists fighting for control of postimperial China. Dynasty follows the Sekloongs' triumphs, tragedies, betrayals, and bloodshed through the decades as they expand and protect their own empire, even as their homeland is torn apart from within by war and ideological upheaval, from the fall of the last emperor to the triumph of Mao Tse-tung. As China turbulently enters the modern world, the Sekloongs also grow in stature and strength as do their desires and wayward passions. Fluent in Mandarin, author Robert Elegant spent many years in Hong Kong as a journalist and commentator, and has authored many acclaimed books on China. His stirring drama combines vivid writing with a deep understanding of Chinese culture, creating "an action-packed novel. conjured up with perception and vigour" ( The New York Times Book Review ).Read less.

It was published in 1911 and is styled as the confession of a man who has turned from sin to Christianity. As a work that first made Masefield famous, it shocked early 20th-century British sensibilities with its direct, honest, and therefore often harsh language, as the life of protagonist violent, drunken womanizer Saul Kane is laid out in detail.

David Thomas (18131894) was a Welsh Independent minister & preacher and author known for The Practical Philosopher: A Daily Monitor for the Business Men of England (1870). The book provided daily moral, ethical, and practical reflections based on the Book of Proverbs, aimed at guiding men in business with principled, religious, and philosophical insights. Thomas was also the originator of the Working Men's Club and Institute, of which Lord Brougham was first president; and of an insurance plan for the benefit of widows of ministers. His congregants included Catherine Mumford (whose wedding to William Booth was officiated by Thomas in 1855) and Wilson Carlile. Pennsylvania's Waynesburg College awarded Thomas an Honorary Doctorate, recognising his efforts to reconcile the churches of the United States and England.

"From the North Foreland to Penzance" by Clive Holland is a historical account written in the early 20th century. The book explores the picturesque harbours and seaports along the southern coastline of England, from North Foreland to Penzance, highlighting their historical significance, beauty, and the romantic tales that accompany these locations. It seeks to capture the essence of these coastal towns and their storied pasts rather than provide mere practical information for sailors or tourists. The opening of the work introduces readers to the North Foreland, setting a reflective tone as it describes its striking cliffs, the historic lighthouse, and the battles that have taken place in its waters. The narrative weaves together the natural beauty of the landscape with rich historical anecdotes, such as the naval battle between English and Dutch fleets in 1653. It further portrays towns such as Ramsgate and Dover, detailing their significant roles in maritime history, the tales of smugglers and shipwrecks, and the memories of notable figures such as Julius Caesar and St. Augustine. This blend of scenic appreciation and historical context sets the stage for a journey along the captivating south coast of England, promising readers a vivid exploration of both its geography and stories.
