(Very good condition, the binding square and firm, minimal wear at the top of the dust jacket and some soiling to spine and the rear cover, otherwise an attractive copy). The contents very clean with bright illustrations by Edward Bawden. Small inscription to front pastedown in pink ink reading "W. C. Inge, Brightwell Manor, 19-vii-54". William Craufurd Inge (1906-2001) was the eldest child of William Ralph Inge (1860-1954), an auhtor, Anglican priest, professor of divinity at Cambridge and dean of St Paul's Cathedral. He was widely known by his title as Dean Inge and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times. Inge bought Brightwell Manor in Oxfordshire in 1933 where he spent his later life until his death in 1954. The Grade II listed country house is now owned by the former British prime minister Boris Johnson.

Charles Howard, Earl of Suffolk, and Bedchamber-woman to Queen Caroline, complaining of the Queen for not having performed her promise to give him a medal and for having sacrificed John Gay, the poet, to the pique of Sir Robert Walpole, and expressing the wish that the Queen would remember what he had said to her about Ireland, also blaming Mrs. Howard for having misled him by hints of preferment in England on the King's accession and congratulating her on her supposed loss of favour at Court, with compliments on her character. First page present is the title page, chipped, soiled and edgeworn, with its engraving partially hand-colored. 232 pages present, but incomplete, breaking off with about 3-4 pages missing from the Voyage to the Houynhnms. 4 engravings (including the one on the title page), three of which are crudely hand-colored. One small map in the text. Some foxing and fading, discoloration from thumbing throughout. Despite wear to the edges of the pages, the textblock remains tight. Bottom corner of the final 2 pages chipped and missing. An early American printing of Jonathan Swift's most famous work, originally published in 1726. It was published in Boston in 1820, but I can find no earlier US edition except for an 1802 abridged version printed by Isaiah Thomas in Worcester. (the seller of that edition mentions a 1787 Philadelphia edition as the 1st US). Please email with questions or to request photos.
