Good only, lacking the salmon-colored front free endpaper, some loss to the cloth of the rear board, corners rounded and with shallow loss to the spine ends. William G. Stevenson was a Northern physican (though born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky) who was traveling South to Arkansas in the spring of 1861 when on April 17th he was rounded up under the suspicion of being a Northern sympathizer. He was impressed by members of the Confederate Army, "encouraged to volunteer" in the CSA and spent the next 13 months traveling with them inthe role of physician. He was transferred from unit to unit (infantry, cavalry, courier, hospital) . In late May, 1862, he escaped from Selma, through Montgomery , where he exchanged his Confederate bills for some gold, then to Chattanooga and finally back to the North.…
