Zustand: Very good. - A superb 13-1/2 inch high by 9-1/4 inch wide original drypoint & etching by the American artist Albert Sterner. The image portrays a dramatic Pagliacci-like clown seated at a partially nude woman's feet. Reaching up, his right hand pulls down her arm as she removes her mask. The woman's head is turned away with a semi-tragic expression. The etching is signed in full by the artist Albert Sterner in pencil along the bottom right border. The print has been beautifully and professionally restored, dry cleaned, washed and lined with Japanese tissue. The lining process used in the restoration provides structural strength to the print. The most common lining papers chosen are Japanese tissues, as they provide excellent strength despite being thin and flexible.Born in London, the American artist Albert Sterner (1863-1946) attended King Edward's School in Birmingham. He traveled to Germany and then studied in Paris with Jean-Leon Gerome and Gustave Boulanger. Sterner moved to Chicago in 1879 to join his family, including the architect Frederick Sterner, who had preceded him there. He produced lithographs, paintings, and illustrations and in 1885 opened a studio in New York where he produced illustrations for periodicals including Harper's Magazine, Schribner's, and The Century, and Collier's. He returned to Paris to study at the Academie Julian in 1888. Returning to the US in 1918, he taught art at New York's Art Students League.
