A limited edition, number 24 of 250 and signed by the author. Illustrated by Albert Sterner. Mary Augusta Ward (1851-1920) was a British novelist who wrote under her married name as Mrs Humphry Ward. Following her education at numerous boarding schools Mary settled in Oxford where her father lectured and was soon married to Humphry Ward. She began her career writing articles for Macmillan's Magazine whilst working on books for children. Ward's novels contained strongly religious subject matter relevant to Victorian values that she practised. Her work was popular in both Great Britain and in the United States. Ward's novels started a popular discussion on historic and essential Christianity, something that no other fiction had yet provoked. Complete in two volumes. In a half morocco binding with gilt detail and marbled boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the spine and bumping to extremities. Front joint to volume 1 starting but sound. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with roughcut edges. Very Good Indeed. book.
