Buchdruck vom Bleisatz. The Spectator war eine täglich erscheinende Londoner Zeitung, 1711?12 gegründet von Joseph Addison und Richard Steele, die sich auf der Charterhouse School kennengelernt hatten. Eustace Budgell, ein Cousin von Addison, trug auch dazu bei. Die Erstausgabe erschien am 1. März 1711. Jede Nummer war etwa 2500 Wörter lang, die Originalserie bestand aus 555 Nummern. Sie wurden in sieben Bänden gesammelt. Die Zeitung wurde ohne Steele 1714 wiederbelebt und erschien sechs Monate lang dreimal die Woche. Diese neue Serie umfasste acht Bände. Trotz einer bescheidenen Auflage von etwa 3.000 Exemplaren wurde der Spectator viel gelesen; Addison schätzte die Leserschaft auf 60.000, etwa ein Zehntel der Bevölkerung Londons. Zeitgenössische Historiker und Literaturwissenschaftler halten diese Zahl nicht für übertrieben; die meisten Leser waren nicht selbst Abonnenten, sondern Besucher eines Kaffeehauses, wo die Zeitung auslag. Die Leser kamen aus allen Ständen, doch richtete sich die Zeitung vor allem an Englands aufstrebenden Mittelstand, große und kleine Kaufleute und Händler. Jürgen Habermas sieht den Spectator als wichtiges Mittel der "strukturellen Transformation der öffentlichen Sphäre", die sich im England des 18. Jahrhunderts vollzog. Diese Transformation, so argumentiert er, sei aus dem Bürgertum heraus entstanden, das sich eben gerade durch Publikationen wie den Spectator als Gruppe formierte. Offiziell war der Spectator politisch neutral, doch vertrat er eindeutig Werte und Interessen der Whigs. Die Politik der Tories wurde in der Figur Sir Roger de Coverleys, eines liebenswerten, aber etwas lächerlichen Landedelmannes, karikiert. Der Spectator blieb im späten 18. und 19. Jahrhundert eine beliebte Lektüre. Er wurde in achtbändigen Ausgaben verkauft. Sein Prosastil und die Kombination aus Moral, Lebensberatung und Unterhaltung galten als vorbildlich. Es gab weitere Zeitungsprojekte oder Diskussionszirkel, der Aufklärung verpflichtet, in Spanien und Italien, deren Anhänger üblicherweise ebenfalls mit dem englischen Wort "Spectators" bezeichnet werden. Being part of the XIIIth Book of Homer's Odysses (pp. 120-134) In addition, there is Pope's 'Garden of Alcinous, from the Seventh Book of Homer's Odysses', which Richard Steele had recently published in an issue of his Guardian. Pope never acknowledged having written the prologue for a benefit performance of one of Thomas D'Urfey's old plays, A Fond Husband: Or the Plotting Sisters, but his authorship has been generally accepted: 'As the prevailing note of witty equivocation and veiled banter is characteristic of Pope, and as several of the lines are undoubtedly his, his hand would appear to have 'held the pen' throughout' (Ault, Twickenham edition, VI p. 102). Among the 'best hands' may well have been Steele himself, or even Addison. Included in this volume as well are four poems by John Gay, and other verses by Thomas Tickell, Thomas Parnell, Eustace Budgell, Laurence Eusden (then poet laureate), and the compiler Steele; there are a number of fine unsigned poems whose authorship has not been traced. This is the genuine first edition, with the misdated title-page; copies with the date corrected are frequently called 'second issue', but the text was in fact entirely reprinted. A nice copy. 'The Miscellany has a respected place in…literary history' (May), with contributions by Steele, Pope, Phillips, Philips, Lady Winchelsea, Parnell, Young, Gay, Tickell, Wharton, et. al. Among the others is James Ward, later Dean of Cloyne, who contributed The Smock-Race, at Finglas. 'The Smock-Race may be part of the Shepherd's Week sequence, though it does not follow classical models like Gay's pastorals except insofar as the games may be considered mock-heroic. Ward, however, does follow his predecessor in minute accounts of local manners and bumpkin bawdiness. His descriptions of rustics on holiday anticipate the much better-known accounts of fairs by Fergusson and Burns. The poem also participates in the sequence describing rural games, beginning with Annalia Dubrensia.
