Written in seven-line stanzas, its royal attribution is the reason this specific meter is known as 'rhyme royal.' +++ Typographic History: This volume is the first appearance of the 'King's Fount,' Ricketts' third and final typeface. It was designed to bridge the gap between the heavy 'Black Letter' of the medieval era and the clarity of modern Roman type. +++ Manuscript Context: The poem survives in a single manuscript (MS Arch. This 1903 Kingis Quair matters because it represents the penultimate achievement of the press before its dissolution in 1904. By marrying the verse of a 15th-century captive king with a bespoke typeface, Ricketts created a 'total work of art.' It remains a primary artifact for the study of the Aesthetic Movement and the evolution of the private press ideal.
