Jonas Stadling (1847-1935) was a Swedish preacher and journalist. He participated in Andrée's expedition in 1897, and the year after he travelled to the northern part of Siberia to, if possible, collect information about the missing expedition. He made interesting botanical discoveries but found no trace of Andrée and his team. First edition. Hulth 135.

Hardback. 286pp 43 ills. in text large 8vo, James Clarke & Co., London 1897. *The author worked with Tolstoy during the famine of 1892. Portrait of Tolstoy on front cover. Includes 58 pages on religious sects. Spine marked and slightly worn, lacks front end-paper, contents very good.

First Edition. First edition in English, 8vo, pp. [iii]-xvi, 315, [1]; 31 plates, 2 maps; original pictorial blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, stamped in white on upper cover; the binding a bit soiled, small snag at the top of the upper joint; the binding is sound and internally the textblock is clean. AB 16665: "Narrative of the author's and two companions' trip in 1898, sponsored by the Swedish Geographical Society to search the Arctic coast for Andree." The second Swedish North Polar balloon expedition from Göteborg, May 18-October (?), 1897, during which Salomon Andrée had intended to reach the North Pole via hydrogen-filled balloon, disappeared and it was Stadling's charge to search for him. It wasn't until 33 years later before its camp (and invaluable diaries and journals) was discovered by a Norwegian expedition in 1930. The cause of the balloonists' deaths was a mystery, as they still had plenty of fuel, bear meat, and ammunition. Speculations include carbon monoxide poisoning, food poisoning, or cold. (See Arctic Exploration and Development, pp. 401-402).

Zustand: Very Good. the top and base of the spine is slightly damaged. There is an inscription inside the cover. The gild portrait is still vibrant, there is a rubmark to the side of it though.
