First edition in English, 8vo, pp. [iii]-xvi, 315, [1]; 31 plates, 2 maps; original pictorial blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, stamped in white on upper cover; the binding a bit soiled, small snag at the top of the upper joint; the binding is sound and internally the textblock is clean. AB 16665: "Narrative of the… author's and two companions' trip in 1898, sponsored by the Swedish Geographical Society to search the Arctic coast for Andree." The second Swedish North Polar balloon expedition from Göteborg, May 18-October (?), 1897, during which Salomon Andrée had intended to reach the North Pole via hydrogen-filled balloon, disappeared and it was Stadling's charge to search for him. It wasn't until 33 years later before its camp (and invaluable diaries and journals) was discovered by a Norwegian expedition in 1930. The cause of the balloonists' deaths was a mystery, as they still had plenty of fuel, bear meat, and ammunition. Speculations include carbon monoxide poisoning, food poisoning, or cold.
