12mo, 3 pp. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with a little damage to the four corners of the second leaf caused by removal from mount. Thirty-five lines of text. Clear and complete. He has been afforded 'very great satisfaction' by the announcement that the Hospital 'is now so nearly completed' that it will 'a few weeks hence be delivered into the possession and management of the Governors'. It is a 'new, capacious and very necessary addition to our metropolitan Hospitals'. 'I purpose', he announces, 'to preside at a Public Dinner which is to be held at the London Pavent on Wednesday the 15th of my next in commemoration of that event'. Asks if the recipient might consider acting as a steward at the dinner ('no liability wil attach to the Office of Steward, and the Dinner Tickets will be only one guinea each'), and for any reply to be addressed to him at the hospital.

St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics was founded in 1750 by City of London philanthropists to treat mental illness among the poor of London. In 1786 it moved from Moorfields to Old Street, where it remained until 1916. Simmons was appointed physician to the hospital in 1781. 6pp, 16mo. A piece of laid watermarked paper has been neatly torn into three 16 x 10 cm leaves: a bifolium, with the single leaf loosely inserted. In good condition, lightly aged. A poignant artefact. Simple, brief notes, giving age, name, date [of admission], address, some with follow-up notes. The six women are 'Eliz. Midwinter' of Gloucestershire, aged 35; 'Rachel Solomon', no age or address; 'Catherine Ream', aged 21, no address; 'Eliz. Townsend', no age, Southwark; 'Margaret Brendly', aged 21, Coleman Street; 'Hannah Watman', aged 54, Cranbrook, Kent. Solomon has been 'Here several times before'; Townsend 'Has been insane 15 months' and is 'rejected'. Of Ream, Simmons writes: 'Her mother keeps a little shop & the patient has been incapable of attending it about two months. | p. 84. [troyen?] white'. Brendly 'was low spirited from a five months - was a servant till October last - is now maniacal - not hereditary - Has been affected by methodism & a love affair -'. Watman 'at nineteen was a short time insane but continued well afterwards till the above date - sober - industrious -'.

An interesting letter, attacking the serving Tory Prime Minister Robert Banks Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool (1770-1828), who had stood against the Duke of Sussex (noted for his liberal sympathies) in the election for President of the Royal Society of Arts. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded three times. The recipient is not named, but is identified in an endorsement on the reverse of the second leaf as 'Earl St Vincent'. Written in a hurried, untidy hand. The letter begins: 'My Dear Lord | Our excellent friend Miss Knight informed me how kind and how anxious You had been about my election as President of the Society for the Promotion of Arts Manufacture and Commerce; You will therefore I trust excuse my intruding upon your time to express the Gratitude for Your Lordship's friendly exertions on the occasion.' Referring to the Prime Minister Lord Liverpool he continues: 'Through the Kindness of my friends my triumph over the Premier has been complete.' His pleasure over his rival's failure 'has not been small on the Occasion, for his Lordship opposed himself, knowing that my name had been up Three Weeks, and even his Vote had been solicited at that period [] Could I prognosticate a further decline in public Opinion I should be most happy for a Minister of England who ventures to establish a Succession by Fraud against the General Wish of Nation is not well calculated to inspire confidence as to his Constitutional [?]'. He ends by sending his regards, and in a postscript asks for an enclosure to be 'delivered to Miss Knight'. Ellis Cornelia Knight (1757-1837) is present among Jervis's mourners in his 1838 biography as 'Miss Knight, formerly, sub-governess to the Princess Charlotte of Wales'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

paper. Zustand: Near fine. Handwritten Letter. Handwritten letter, two pages, includes mailing envelope. The letter reads: "Dear Mary Louise & Tom: Greetings from a foreign world. This is a really fascinating job. Far different, however than the private practice of law, where you make decisions promptly + move on. Here it's decisions by consensus - if all Departments don't concur, the President resolves the differences. Probably the way it ought to be but makes for painfully slow decision making - except of course where national security considerations dictate a prompt response. / Really impressed with the caliber of the people in gov't. from say the Deputy Ass't Secty. level up. Intelligent, hard-working, motivated, etc. / We work long hours - 8am - 7:30 or 8:00 PM (at least they're long for me). Spent about an hour and a quarter with the President on Tuesday last re Russian grain & maritime agreement with Russians. Pretty heady stuff for a lawyer from Houston, Texas. I really already miss things at home. Maybe that will ease when the family moves up on the 9th. St. David's Episcopal is only about 3 blocks from the house we've rented. Average age of congregation seems way up there. Sort of sad. Got away this weekend - to Clayton, N.Y. for a day and a half (where Mary Stuart 's family spends the summer). Nice time with Jamie, my 20 year old who was there. Sort of coming back into the fold, it seems. Back today for the IMF and World Bank meeting here. U.S. does a lot in the area for the underprivileged. / Back this weekend for speech in San Antonio. Hope to see you Sunday. With best to you both- Jim." This uniquely personal letter was sent on September 1, 1975, days after James Baker was appointed Undersecretary of Commerce by President Gerald R. Ford. He notes a visit to his late spouse's family in New York and his strained relationship with his son, James A. Baker IV, known as Jamie. He also discusses his recent meetings with President Gerald R. Ford and the impact his decisions have on world events. An interesting look at the early political career of a future Secretary of State. Handwritten letter from James A. Baker III, the Undersecretary of Commerce to Rev. J. Thomas Bagby, the head of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston. Baker was a member of the church, along with President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush. (illustrator). Signed.
