Per R.P.D.Angelum Sangrinum Abbatem Congregationis Casine[n]sis carmine conscripta. Rome, Bartolomeo Bonfardino, 1587. Small 4to. [8] leaves + 246 pages of text + [3] p chapter index + [1 blank]p. Large printer s woodcut device of a hedgehog at end. Vellum. First edition of this hommage in Latin verse of the life and miracles performed by St Benedict (480-547), founder of the great Benedictine Monastery of Monte Cassino, superbly illustrated with engravings by Aliprando Caprioli after designs of the prominent Roman Baroque painter Bernardino Passeri (1530-c1590). The hagiography is divided into 4 parts by Angelo Faggi (1500-93), a learned monk at Montecassino, known as 'Il Sangrino' who became Inquisitor of the Order in 1567 on the recommendation of the Reformer Pope Pius V and ended his life as Abbot of Montecassino. The dedication is to Odoardo Farnese, son of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese.
